There have been a lot of CG-fests. Usually takes me right out of the movie. Makes it way less ..visceral? in those tense action sequences than what you get in TG where you can practically feel the Gs exerted on the actors.
Well okay that's a very specific thing you're looking for
As an example, for me the MCU movies have recently moved to a direction that makes for a much better cinematic experience. More interesting visuals, better soundtracks (MoM, No Way Home), more attention paid to "how does this work in a theater".
Then there's just cinematic dramas, "First Man" for example, great cinema experience, probably not much in a living room.
Then there's movies like Dune which is barely worth watching outside a cinema, but quite impressive in a theater. Mood pieces, like a lot of A24 movies too.
...Of course I don't really get the whole "tension" thing in action scenes, I mostly look for other things. Action scenes almost never have what I'd call "tension", 99% of the time you have a fairly accurate idea of where the scene will go and the "how" is just a bunch of stunts that have no relevance to anything that happens right before or after.

That's one, but 10 years ago.
Trying to think of something in the last 5 years that was a truly immersive experience with a lot of practical footage/effects. I know there have been a few. But not many.
Movies with a lot of practical effects aren’t common but if done right cgi fests are no less immersive, enjoyable or visceral. Never once felt taken out of the movie when watching IW. It was also about as believable as Top Gun 2.
1917 was the last movie I was before the pandemic and I was blown away. Typically if a movie uses on location shoots with CGI they work perfect at this point. Marvel has alway done an incredible job when they're not rushed as well; visually Infinity War and End Game are incredible. Then you have the final battle in Black Panther which was terrible. Any sort of flying superhero fight is brutal to watch still, Superman fights, the Vision's fighting in Wanda (not in theatres but still).
Dune was a must watch in threats as well, still love it at home man that was a beautiful movie. Planet of the Apes Trilogy are all gorgeous as well.

Fury Road came out closer to 5 years ago than 10 for what it's worth.
Someone in this thread was all "I'm not a Jennifer Connelly guy"
lol, can you imagine?
If you mean me, I didn't say that, I said I just don't really care that she's in the movie. I don't think I can remember a time when I actually thought, "wow, that movie has a very attractive woman in it, that's a big selling point and makes me want to watch it". Even when I was a teenager.

Put on Booksmart with my roommate last night. One of the better coming of age flicks I've seen. Definitely a lot of laughing. A little bit of tears. The two leads were superb and the side characters all well done to not be "classic" high school stereotypes. (I guess other than the gay kids, who were so over the top flamboyant, kinda made me wonder about why they made such a choice when similar things in older movies like School of Rock don't really have a good look now).
Regardless, had a great time. Thought Kaitlyn Dever (the red-headed lead) was a stand out. Looking forward to seeing what she does as she gets older.
I'd say as a comparison to "Superbad for girls", it's a better overall movie than Superbad, but Superbad had me laughing harder at its ridiculousness.

Top Gun was as expected. Not a very good movie at it's core but a really good popcorn movie. Lots of Jennifer Connolly talk and there's no doubt she's a very good looking lady but maybe it was me but she looked she needs to eat a little bit more food. She looked scrawny.
