We should "Oiler" him onto the second line, then trade him for nothing! Probably what you're saying is the best option though

He earned it...if we want actual competition can't be mad about a guy earning a spot

While it's true that Rieder has had it rough lately...
Donovan had three 10+ goal seasons ever.
That one 18 goal season Donovan had in Calgary was a massive anomaly in his career.
The odds of Rieder having a decent scoring season are much better than Donovan had.

either way, I'll take it. Decent guy to have when injuries happen.

Or was it just 67 games where his 5v5 shooting percentage collapsed.
14/15: 4.88% Shooting Percentage - 8 goals
15/16: 6.16% Shooting Percentage - 9 goals
16/17: 8.85% Shooting Percentage - 10 goals
17/18: 8.8% Shooting Percentage - 9 Goals (Including 4 goals in his last 20 games in L.A. on 11.8% shooting)
Then he got to Edmonton.
18/19: 0.00% Shooting Percentage - 0 Goals

Such a bizarre offseason.
Replacing Smith, Neal, Hathaway with 3 of the Oilers most disappointing players seems very strange. Smith and Neal were our 2 worst players for most of last season sonthere is that but Reider being the one PTO to earn a contract is pretty surprising.

Reider looked like a legit NHL player before going to Edmonton. If it wasn't Edmonton this would be viewed as a good reclamation project

I like it.
Adding a utility player is never a bad thing. He doesn’t need to score to be effective.

If he even scores one goal, it would be worth it.

Do the talks consist of how they’re paying him? Peanuts? As he puts up points?

Jankowski, Backlund, Ryan, and Reider are about as good as you can ask for in penalty killers. No problems with this at all.
For a 4th line player we’ve had a lot worse here in Calgary.

I'd give him bonuses for goals scored against the Edmonton Oilers.

He may not out score Neal, but at least you can put him out there and count on him not to be a complete liability the second he’s not floating around being carried by Connie McNuggets.

Tobias Reider was a minus-8 on a team with a minus-42 goal differential.
James Neal was a minus-5 on a team with a plus-62 goal differential.
The difference between the Oilers and Flames amounts to 104 goals. That same difference between Reider and Neal is 3.

I swear that fanbase’s answer to everything is “just play him with McDavid.”
And, despite the coaching staff’s best efforts, he cannot play every minute of every game. And for some reason, every year the fans and media are left to wonder why the shambles of a team they’ve assembled around him failed once again.
James Neal will be the latest in that trend.

I have wanted him for a few years now. I think he will be a very good bottom six player.

Peters had a hard-on for this guy, so I’m all for it. He has been a great coach.
