Default Jersey Poll - All Time #29

Did this five years ago, thought it might be interesting again. Always fun to see younger fans and older fans arguing over different generations in a battle.

Will put one up a day whenever possible.

Have fun! and Go old guys!

How it works:

I pick off a key group of players for each jersey. I don't use every name, as that gets tedious and unnecessary (probably go with say 5 unless there are many that wore the same number).

I also don't put up a guy for the number he isn't known for (Iginla shouldn't win #24 for example)

Results:
1 - Roman Turek 67.8% (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=138746)

Default Jersey Poll - All Time #29

Otto!! One of my all-time faves. Was an absolute beast in the faceoff circle.

If this isn't a slam dunk, I don't know what is, lol.

My only fear about this poll is that Joel himself might find anyone who doesn't vote for him and beat them up. He was a warrior for us and I LOVED his time here.

Otto should get the same number here as his faceoff win percentage was: 99%

I went with Otto, but I will always have a soft spot for noodles and his massive crease-clearing slash on Franzen. Beauty.

The first name I ever had put on a jersey was Otto.

He's 52 years-old and still looks like he could step on the ice and win an important draw and then score an OT winner.

Speaking of which...

I distinctly remember watching sports highlights when I was younger and Otto scored a beautiful goal off the rush, deking the defenceman out of his jockstrap along the boards as he crossed the blueline. The host of the show (might have been Don Taylor or Darren Dutchyshen?) said something along the lines of "the big man looking like Jean Beliveau out there!"

Man, it got me so excited at the time, being a kid following this team was so much fun.

Yelle filled the role admirably for a bit. Didn't have the size but did the rest.

Otto. Greatest checking line center I've ever seen. Could win face-offs like nobody's business. How many 3rd line shutdown centers do you see routinely over the 50 point plateau?

My biggest and best memories of Joel Otto were vs. the Oilers and namely Mark Messier.

I was obvious they HATED each other with a passion. Neither of those guys were fighters but they fought each other many times and they were great tilts to be sure. Full out haymakers. Two big guys throwing till they couldn't throw anymore. It was awesome. Always nasty.

Flames really hit a home run signing Otto to a contract, as he was never drafted. His faceoff ability was unreal and defensive abilities put him against the top centers in the league every night. He was nominated for the Selke twice.

In the Flames Cup win, Otto was huge. 19 points in 22 games for a third line center with top PK duties that held all the top players in check. I met him many times and he was always very cool, you could just tell he possessed many qualities that a leader has. A quiet confidence to him. It was a sad day when the Flames could no longer afford him and he got a big contract with the Flyers as a UFA.

My favourite memory of the old battles of Alberta was when they would show a close-up of Otto's helmet and you could see it was covered in streaks of blue because he and Messier would butt heads in the face off dot so hard that the blue from Messier's helmet would rub off onto Otto's.

16- leaning Chouinard (over Stillman)
17- Hrdina
