Default Any Excel experts....?

I am running Excel 2007

I have a sheet with a ton of phone numbers.

Some are formatted:

(403)555-1234

and others

403-555-1234

I need them to all look like the second example without the brackets. I have tried the formatting, but nothing changes. Or all the formatting for phone numbers includes the brackets.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think first you need them all as just numbers without any characters in them, so you could use substitute I think.. Create a column beside it, and set the formula as =SUBSTITUTE(A1,"-","") (assuming the column is A) then fill the formula down.. do the same for the ( and ) characters.. Or copy the column to a new worksheet and do a search and replace for those characters.

Once you've got it as all numbers, then create a custom format that's just ###-###-####

This won't handle phone numbers over 10 digits though.
