Local Restaurant Thread
This comes from a comment made by AcGold in the Timmies failure thread.
I think it would be cool to have a thread for local owned restaurants.
I will start for my town:
Bamboo Hut (they have two other restaurants in Dead Rear, Blue Dragon and Sophear).
They are just of the lake shore, and serve Thai food. They don't have a website but here is the Urbanspoon for them:
http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/72/15461...ut-Sylvan-Lake
Often they will shut down for a week or two for vacation. Great food.
Open Range, a little pub/grill. Again no website but Urbanspoon:
http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/72/15020...on-Sylvan-Lake
Very much a love or hate place, I love it. It is a locals place, and everytime I go, I see someone I know. Grub is solid pub.

Sticking with Sylvan Lake:
Pete's at the Beach, typical Canadian style food. Good pizza and good fish & chips. Best part about this place is the atmosphere - eclectic decor complete with vintage Pachinko machine, good music, and a great patio for people watching Lakeshore Drive. My long-time favourite restaurant in town.

Obee's is good for pizza too, but I feel like it's gone downhill a bit over the past few years.

Rouge is fantastic - a little pricey but worth it.
My wife and I recently went to the little French bistro in Brittainia and really liked it. I'm not that familiar with french food but I thought it was great.

Tried out two really good restaurants in the last little while:
- The Himalayan (Nepalese cuisine, 17th Ave): great food at a decent price. It is a more formal place
- Raj Palace (South Indian cuisine, Royal Oak): very authentic (from what I could tell) at a reasonable price. This is really a hole in the wall type of place, but the food was very enjoyable

The Himalayan is the best restaurant in town. Small, busy, but the quality of the food and service hasn't wavered a bit. The renovations on the inside are really well done too.
Found it about three years ago, and I'm thrilled it's working out so well for them - even though it's tough to get a table nowadays.

I'm not sure why people rave about the Himalayan so much
From my experience, the fresh naan bread was good but the "Mango Fruity" was a bad attempt at trying to bring a twist to butter chicken. I also cant believe I paid extra for canned fruit as a dessert

Raj Palace in Huntingon is the strangest place ever. They won't let you take out anything with a masala (spice mix) in it as they are so paranoid about people stealing their recipe.
There is a really good Pakistani resteraunt off 17thave and 52nd st. right in front of Pat's Place called Chilli's. It is mainly street food (bun kebob, Briyani, Karahi, Pakora, Gol Cappa ect) but it is amazing.
It's hard to call 1 resteraunt the best indian in the city because everyone does something better than the next guy (although some are best avoided).
The best Indian place was the Calgary Sweet House by Jack James but the family who owned it (since the 80s/90s) sold and now it is a south indian dosa place.

Ate there a couple of years ago for our anniversary (stayed at the hotel too) and it was pretty good. Ours had numerous courses and my wife has many dietary restrictions which they were able to accommodate. It was pretty pricey, but worth it for a special night out.
Also, breakfast was included with the stay and the lemon ricotta pancakes were super tasty.

The best indian take out that I have found is probably Saffron on 52nd Avenue NW. Really nice family owned place, and I've never been disappointed.
I've heard so many people saying how the Coup on 17th Avenue is a great place, but I've given it three tries, and they have consistently screwed up the order, cold food, questionable customer service. Probably worth walking down the street.
If you like fried chicken as a treat, do yourself a favour and try Olive Chicken on 10th Avenue. Not as greasy as other restaurants, and getting the fried chicken with sweet and spicy sauce on the side is amazing.

Oh man, that Olive Chicken must have some super addictive ingredient in the hot and sweet sauce. Friday night (after the Jays game had started) I NEEDED some of that chicken so I drove down from Scenic Acres to 10th to get my fix. It was worth it! I got home in time to see all the important stuff anyway. Highly recommend it. Also, there's a place across from Northland Mall in the NW called 'Lazy Monkey', and they have Taiwanese fried chicken. The batter is flavored with basil and it's all cut up, so you use a skewer to shovel it in your mouth. Also would recommend. It looks like only a bubble tea place when you walk in, but don't be fooled.

My favourite hole in the wall place nearby is Plaka Greek Taverna in Shawnessy. Their wine prices are atrocious, but their food is really good. Come to think of it I haven't been there in a while... time for another visit!

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but it's extremely busy on weekends, I've seen line ups out the door waiting for a table.
