Solid contract for Lindholm's production.

That is a great contract. I really wanted to see two things:
1) an AAV under $5M
2) 6 years or longer
I thought we would have to settle for 5 years in order to keep it under $5M, but getting that 6th year is just fantastic.
The moment he breaks 50 points (and he will, probably this year), this becomes an absolute bargain deal.
Treliving really has the core teed up beautifully with respect to the cap. Now let's get a great deal put together for Hanifin.

I really see Lindholm breaking out around the midpoint of this contract. A lot of great Swedes hit their scoring prime in the 27-31 age range (Naslund, Sedins, Erickson, Backlund)
It wouldn’t shock me to see Lindholm hit 60+pts in a season soon.

Yeah, this = good.
These contracts are Trelivings strong suit, apparently.
Once Brouwer is off books, there isn't a bad contract on this team, and it's not horrible anyway.
Very few teams can say this.

What was Carolina offering that ended their negotiations? You would think Carolina would have loved a contract like this.

I didn't even realize that last year was an off year for Lindholm. He was actually on a 52 point pace if he had played the full season the year prior.

The beauty of this deal is it pays him just under that for his non decline years without a need for the player to improve to make the contract worthy. If he finds that 55 point range for the six years it's a great deal. 60 points and it's one of Calgary's better contracts.
Getting Giordano, Gaudreau and Monahan done before the McDavid contract, and then Neal and Lindholm done at reasonable rates without clauses is a heck of a run.
|
Plus, some of those contracts are older, having been signed years ago.
If you look at the 100th forward, and the 100th contract, I think you then have to assume that if all those contracts were signed this year, that they would be higher.
Over the course of the next 6 years, that 100th forward contract probably rises to more than $6.5M. And Lindholm will be in his prime for the entirety of the 6 years.

This isn't a steal; it's roughly fair value for a guy whose maximum production to date has been 45 points. RFAs in his position who have received 5+ on similar term have all had better seasons than that prior to signing. I'm not trashing the signing by any means - it's perfectly fine. But it's an absolutely masterful job of managing expectations via the media before releasing the actual number.

Yeah this has the potential to be a really good contract.
People love to talk about the Couturier and Kadri contracts as such good value - well going long term for a young guy at a cheap value is how you do that.
Looking at the player average for the 3 years prior to signing these contracts:
Kadri - 1.49 Pts/60
Couturier - 1.35 Pts/60
Lindholm - 1.41 Pts/60
Potential to be one of those deals that really helps change a team's cap structure in a positive way moving foward.

We have more like 9 million in cap space as the 8 million includes 13 forwards already with two left to sign so someone will be waived freeing up 900k or so.
Once you do that and carry only 14 Feds I think you can fit everyone in.

expected it to be somewhere between 5.0 and 5.5 for a 6 year deal, so I'm very happy with this. Hope they go long-term with Hanifin too, and if they had to buyout Brouwer to do it ... well, let's say I wouldn't be too sad.

This is why I don't understand the people who want to fire Treliving. You may disagree with some of the moves he makes - going for Smith, trading for Hamilton instead of Jones, various FA signings.
But.
When you look at his moves, they're logical, they're not made out of desperation, and while you may not agree with the specific player he choses to acquire, you cannot deny he identifies the right areas of weakness and does whatever he can to resolve it.
One bad contract on this team, and it's Troy Brouwer. That's REALLY hard to do.
As for Lindholm himself.
He has been just under or above 40 points for four straight seasons. He can play centre and RW, 3v3, kill penalties, and play on the powerplay. His 45 point season actually only saw him play 72 games, so he could've had a 50-pt campaign thrown in already. That year is the only time in the last four Lindholm missed more than 1 game, included playing all 82 in two of the last four.
If Lindholm's production stays exactly where it is, plus or minus 5 pts, this is a fine deal. If he's Backlund 2.0, it's a better deal. Lindholm is light years better at 23 than Backlund was.
Welcome aboard, Elias, and #extendTreliving

Pretty close to the going rate.
8 M left for Hanifin, Jankowski, Hathaway and Kulak and backup goalie That is an 8/5 = 1.6M average.
Brouwer buyout in the works?

Great contract. If Lindholm stays at what he is this contract is still fine. Any improvement is a win. If he breaks out this will be a steal.
