The thing I like about Zary is they say he drives his line and he makes plays towards the middle if the ice.
His play in the AHL was impressive and I have high hopes for the kid.

Sutter gets asked about Phillips at 1:30. Says Phillips would have to be on the active roster to play him, and that is up to Treliving not him. He does say that he would like to see him get a game, along with others that were left behind in Calgary

Was never added to the active roster though, to my knowledge.
He said he would like to see Phillips get a game, as well as other guys that were left back in Calgary. He's not saying Phillips is one of the guys that was left back in Calgary
If Phillips doesn't play tomorrow that is a question for Treliving, not Sutter.

Is Treliving part of a team, or just decides which prospects get to play? I am confused.
Everyone's been asking about the youngsters, but this is Treliving's call? He must have his reasons.

Just wild speculation, but has Treliving maybe been told he’s on his way out, and isn’t to be making any more decisions? Because not playing kids right now does not make any sense, and Sutter deflecting saying not my decision is a little crazy.

The more likely scenario and there are rumours swirling that he will be promoted to President of Hockey Operations.

LOL...for 2 weeks it’s been Sutter holding back the kids.
So much anger and so little accurate information.

Treliving: “Hey Darryl, if I put Phillips on the roster will you play him?”
Darryl: “No”
Treliving: “OK, I won’t then”
Reporter: “Why aren’t you playing Phillips?”
Darryl: “He’s not on the roster” [mwahahahahahaha]

Question: would adding Phillips or the others not on the roster necessitate pulling one of the existing guys off the roster (and presumably assigning them to the AHL or something on paper)?
In other words, would it cost the existing roster player money?

Well that raises some interesting questions.
Does management not think Phillips deserved to be put on the active roster and utilized by Darryl?
Or are they legitimately trying to hide him from Seattle? Would Seattle select a small guy who has never even played a game in the NHL? I don't really think that the Flames are that worried about Seattle selecting him but it is interesting that they won't make him available to Sutter. I also don't see why Sutter would ask to have Phillips put on the roster either; he's probably never seen him play at all.
I do think that Sutter likes and respects Conroy, and Phillips is kind of his baby. So I don't see why Sutter would just shutdown an opportunity for Phillips, if he were given that chance.

I think it was to give Dawes the opportunity to go where ever he wanted. He was free to sign anywhere after that plus he got some money for it. I don't think the buy out had much impact on the cap overall.
He ended playing only 13 more NHL games, so it's not like Darryl let Martin St. Louis walk.
I'm totally speculating here but maybe there was some reason they needed to get him off the roster.
I wouldn't call it silly without having all the information. There's usually a good reason. They essentially replaced him with Alex Tanguay the next season so that could be it.
Again another example of Darryl Sutter acquiring a small skilled player and giving him an opportunity. Dawes had his best season in Calgary.

The only reason I could think that Treliving would choose not to put Phillips on the roster even though Darryl wants to play him would be to keep him from Seattle's prying eyes and keep it a mystery of whether or not he can play at the NHL level.
If that was the case, it seems pretty silly because I don't think one or two meaningless games against a tired Canucks team is going to change Francis's mind one way or the other.

Since Seattle will be choosing players from 30 teams, they will want to select some players that they like but are also waiver exempt. There are only 23 spots on their NHL roster so they will select some players that are in a situation to Phillips, no?

I have been vocal on the roster decisions since being eliminated. However, I really liked sutter's comments yesterday. Particularly in dube.
He's been hot garbage this year, biggest disappoint on the team, in my opinion.
