Full hour with Treliving on the Fan
Didn't see this posted anywhere. Nothing really jumping out from the conversation for me, but it's always great to hear from the GM.
- Best time of the year is the playoffs
- Lots of hope and excitement this time of year
- Year two with the coach and familiarity should help team jump right in
- 2 takeaways from Penticton: the guys they were hoping would play well did, and they were impressed with new the new additions. Spoke specifically about Foo, Jankowski, Mangiapanni, Valimaki, Andersson, Fischer, Godin, Olas-Mattson, and Schneider as standing out
- Dylan Olsen - has gone through struggles on and off the ice. Maybe came into the league too early. Here and taking a look at him. Still young, training hard in the summer. Looking for defensive help wherever you can get it
- Joel Lowry - big, smart, thinks the games well, good character, play wing or center, looking forward to seeing him.
- By design, there is a job or two up for grabs
- The team is now entering the winning phase
- Legitimately have a handful of guys who are mature, have developed as pros, and are ready to take the next step
- Foo does not have a spot to lose, he needs to win a job
- The team is hopeful that they have a surprise player in camp this year, someone they may not be expecting to win a job
- Bartkowski did a good job for the team last year, skates well, played on a cup team
- Looking forward to seeing Kulak. Wanting to see him step in and grab a spot
- Last year Hathaway was one of the last cuts, kept showing things in practice and games, wasn't really on anyone's radar coming into camp
- Wanting to see younger players come in, get noticed, and win a job. Playing it safe gets you a trip to Stockton
- Glass and Cramorossa can both skate and play an energy role, character players
- Gazdic is a big strong guy, character guy
- Treliving didn't talk to Bennett personally during the negotiation process but called when the deal was done to congratulate him
- Worked hard to build goaltending depth
- Excited to see Gillies and Rittich after their summer training
- Parsons tweaked his back at Penticton, hoping he's ready for camp
- Rittich has more pro experience because of time in Europe, one of the top goalies in the AHL last year, may be closer than some people think
- Rittich and Gillies work well together, push each other
- Gillies is a terrific prospect
- Goaltending is the most important position, can't have too many of them
- Ferland will start on the top line
- Important camp for Whotherspoon, new draft class coming in every year
- First conversation about Hamonic took place two years ago. Serious conversations started at the draft combine
Please forgive spelling mistakes, especially on player names. Had to do a little paraphrasing. Hopefully I captured the essence of what he said correctly.

Well done.
I listened to that this AM as well.
This part stuck with me..

He was emphatic about how difficult a deal this one was. He said something like " this was a grind, I mean they are all grinding to a point but THIS was a GRIND".
Which tells me he was relentless throughout and that more than likely was rebuffed by Snow at more than one turn, which probably had things looking like it wasn't going to happen.
Dude is nothing if not persistent when he sees what he wants. Well on his way to becoming an elite GM/Executive. Really pleased Burke got him and kudos to Burke for the hire.

Heard that as well.
Was thinking today, imagine if Treliving was hired two or three years earlier? Imagine if he was the guy looking over the team when they moved veterans for picks and prospects to start off the rebuild?
Can't help but think his dog on a bone persistence would have landed the team in a much better spot on the Bouwemeester and Iginla deals.

I think he would've been an ideal GM to accumulate as many assets as possible, not just on the home run assets like you mention, but the Tim Jackman's of the world as well.
Very happy with him as GM on a practical as well as philosophical level.

Now there's a debate we haven't had on CP before.

If there's anyone who can get Duchene on a decent deal, it's the Flames GM.

Sakic has stood fast to this point, you have to wonder about a tipping point with him; but that aside it's 6 mill coming on the books for two years.

Is "Waiting For Gawdin" a thing yet?
Like Spencer Foo once was, a unheralded camp invite.
Schneider and Rittich getting shout-outs is interesting too.

Puzzled by this. What was the context, please?

More that every year someone comes out of no where and grabs their attention. \could be one of the TO's. Could be a young guy...could be a guy they only brought in for preseason vet minimum purposes...but whoever it is its someone who wins a job they didnt expect to do so. At either the AHL or with the big club.

Seems like there are more spots up for grabs this year than in the past. Good. I know Treliving likes competition, but it's more meaningful when a spot on the opening roster is on the line instead of having the final roster all but cast in concrete before the group even hits the ice.
