Anyone change their Facebook profile pic to a cartoon character yet?
Mine is of Carebears characters.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_16...-10391698.html
This is taking over Facebook.
Kind of a fun thing for child abuse awareness I guess...I don't mind some form of physical discipline on kids though, but nothing over the top.

How the frack does this change anything? If you actually want to impact anything having Beastly and Shreaky as your profile picture is going to sweet dick all. I hate fake lazy 'activism' like this.

Probably true, and I bet the person who came up with this couldn't care less about child abuse, but still a mini fun thing to take part in.
At least gets people talking about child abuse. Don't see how it could hurt, but probably doesn't help a whole lot either.

I refuse to take part in any slacktavist campaign.
People need to donate their time or money to organizations that make a difference. I know a lot of people who believe that changing their picture or writing "i like it on the floor" is making a difference. It's misguided and is doing nothing for the causes that are worthwhile. Society is coming to accept this as a form of awareness, but it needs to be recognized that this is nothing but an egotistical display for people to pretend that they actually care about real issues.

It's nice to see you handle it the Great Canadian way. The Great Canadian way is to complain about it and yet do absolutely nothing!
Put a ribbon on for breast cancer, grow a beard for prostate cancer... Where a poppy for vets (and donate), change your facebook profile picture... At least it's something.
Thanks Puckluck, I was not aware of this idea. Who knows, it might start a bigger campaign and create some attention and funds for this issue.

Not only is it egotistical, but it keeps people from actually becoming involved in ways that can actually make a difference. It generates complacency. I used to work with Greenpeace a lot, and I'd often talk to people about different environmental concerns and things people can do to get more involved. I can't count how many people would tell me they already did their bit by turning their lights off for an hour each Earth Day and then not think twice about it for every other day of the year. It actively kept people from becoming involved in other, far more meaningful, ways.
It doesn't matter which organization or cause you're about, complacency generated by small "gestures" like this can be very bad, even if the original thought of it is a good thing.

Changing something on Facebook doesn't even do the minuscule amount to difference compared to other things you mentioned. People get pledges to grow moustaches for Movember, you 'buy' your poppy and ribbon.
No organization I know of gets money from what I put on Facebook. Well aside from whomever Zuckerberg sold my identity too. But that doesn't help anyone.

I've been too busy beating my son to have time for this.
On the plus side, today I learned the term "slacktivism".
