TJ Brodie and the Norris
Wondering if this is worth a discussion. TJ has arguably been the Flames best dman this season, tied for top 10 in dman scoring, second best +/- player in the top 10 scoring but playing on the worse defensive team in the league, and logs a ton of ice time for the team.
Does he get any considerations? Thoughts?

Not a chance. I love TJ Brodie, but he was injured early on and Erik Karlsson and Doughty both have him beat easily.

He won't get a lot of consideration this season because of Giordano's strong finish (voters can have reasonable doubt as to whether he's even the best D on his team, let alone the league). But this season and the World Cup will lay the groundwork for increasing consideration in subsequent seasons.

Brodie will never win the Norris. They need to make an award for the best overall defensemen and he would be a frontrunner with players like Vlasic.

The Norris is pretty much a scoring trophy now and he doesn't have a hard enough shot to get it

The conversation he is now in consideration for is top 10 d-man in the league. He's arguably top 10 but arguably not, it's a tough list. If he's not top 10 he's on the cusp or in the conversation.
He's not in conversation for best defensemen in the league yet.

The Flames are 30th in PK, 29th on PP and 28th in overall standings. I know it's a team sport but I don't think you could responsibly give Brodie a Norris vote based on that alone, not even top 5.
I imagine he will get a few 4th or 5th place votes and finish about 20th. Last year he was 18th. Giordano in 6th and Wideman 20th.

He's currently tied for 10th in scoring among D-men and has played 10 fewer games than the rest except Letang.

Brodie is fantastic, but there are a few things holding him back from a Norris this year.
Bad team, injury and lack of name recognition (this is important, whether you want to believe it or not).
Maybe next year.

I think it's become pretty well stated in the past year that Brodie is a top-10 defensemen in the league. Go on HFboards and see for yourself. He's garnered a lot of support from fans of other teams and emerged from under Gio's shadow.

Anyone who is still having that conversation is out of date.
Are you still wondering if Johnny is too small for the NHL, too?

Karlsson probably will win it, and Doughty should win it. They really should create a Bobby Orr/Paul Coffey award for the highest scoring defenseman, similar to the Art Ross, and leave the Norris for the best actual defenseman.

The bobby Orr trophy would HAVE to be for best actual defenseman

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike 11m11 minutes ago T.J. Brodie is second in the NHL in even-strength scoring by a defenseman.
....and that's with losing 10 games or whatever to injury.
If he had a good shot, he'd probably be in contention every single year. He's just entering his prime now.

That's why I added Coffey in there. Orr just happened to put up absurd amounts of point while also being the best defenseman in the league.

Playing on an awful Flames team will kill any hopes Brodie has of seriously factoring into this award.
But what this year will probably be is a stepping stone. I'll predict he finishes top 10 in voting, and that the recognition he started to receive last year will increase this. If he remains our best defenceman over the next couple years and the team itself grows into a solid contender, that is when he will get legitimate pushes for the Norris.

Maybe at some point but not this year.
You have to play at an elite level for a while to 'earn' it.
Or win the Dman scoring title.
If he makes Team Canada and plays well, that will buy him credibility that will help him in future years.
But until then...

Yeah it's very hard to award the best D award to a team with the most goals given up.

By the way, there was a discussion in another thread about Hamilton (after Ferraro was ragging about him not getting 60 pts) which led to a discussion about how many Dmen actually hit 60 pts...
The answer (in recent years) is 2 to 4 per year, typically.
Brodie's current PPG now puts him on a 62 point pace

When was his last goal? November? He needs to score more goals. His assists are fine.
