I can give real-world examples of the program I'm advocating:
Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark.
They have the kinds of egalitarian policies and strong public services that Canadians say they want. And they pay for them with higher taxes across the board than Canadians currently pay.
I guess the downside is they pay those high taxes. Though fair to say, they're more cohesive societies than we are. Like Americans, we want the best of everything, but we want someone else to pay for it.

I wrote that in light of the reports that Trump only paid $750 in federal taxes. If no one's tax rate went up, but the loopholes (legal and illegal) were closed, the uber-rich would be paying their fair share and it would be possible to reduce or eliminate income tax for lower incomes families.
This isn't some radical left eat the rich scheme. In fact I agree, social democratic countries you listed are great examples of the tax system working fairly well. A VAT (GST equivalent) goes a long way in eliminating corporate tax avoidance. The USA should implement this.

Debates commission plans to cut off mics if Trump or Biden break rules
Quote:
The commission that oversees the general election presidential debates said Wednesday it will be making changes to the format of the remaining two debates. One key change it plans to implement: Cutting off the microphones of President Trump and Joe Biden if they break the rules, according to a source familiar with the commission's deliberations. The plans have not been finalized and the commission is still considering how it would carry out the plan.

Does Trump refuse the next two debates due to that?
Or does Trump believe himself able to have enough self control not to be cut off dozens of times?

True. Does muting a mic really make a difference? Biden would still hear him, I imagine.

True, Trump's voice really carries compared to Biden's.
For the debate the other day, if you listen to it in it's three different forms (television, radio, transcript) they actually come out quite different. The transcribers did one hell of a job.

If I were on Trumps team I would 100% agree to this (doubtful Trump will, but who knows).
They know Trump won't be able to follow the rules, so they can either have him look like more of an idiot, or they can let him get cut off, and trot out how biased the debate was. They'll say "Just look at the numbers, they cut off Trumps mic 120 times, they only cut of Biden's 4 times. What a terrible biased system!"
It won't matter that Trump interrupted/broke the rules 30x more often, they'll just hold it up as proof that the debate is biased, and you can't trust the media.
If the rules are changed so that mics can be cut, I would bet a lot of money that that is exactly the narrative coming out of the Trump campaign the next day.

Simple solution. Make their podiums into booths and the mics auto turn off when asking the other candidate a question.

Bad idea. Nobody cares about the actual ideas these guys have. They want to see how they handle the interaction. Booths and cut mics just make it taking turns with talking points.

Taking turns with 'talking points' is the purpose of a debate, lol. It's only the MAGA cult that gets off on seeing Trump trample anything in his way. Most American's aren't tuning in for a Jerry Springer episode.
Let's face it, there's no room (or even capacity) for reasonable political discourse because Trump and the GOP have no philosophy, or even a 2020 platform, other than to exploit division and use whatever means available to win. Trump can't win on ideas and accomplishments so he uses the only tools left, bullying and lying.

You see, the problem is that debates are no longer about the issues, they are a circus. The solution, of course, is to make sure they are not about the issues... and continue to be a circus.
It makes perfect sense.

I would like to see Canadian Daniel Dale (Twitter: @ddale8) doing live fact checking during debates and Trump gets called on it in real time.
How can you debate a pathological liar otherwise...

It's really not. The usual "US politics" style of "debate", which is a short series of stump speeches without the parties really interacting with or debating each others' points of view, is not a real debate. These things are a sham.
... But they're certainly more informative than what we saw the other night, and Trump isn't capable of a real debate. So at this point we'll take what we can get.

Had an idea!

Either you do it this way or you get candidates to sit down with someone for 2-3 hours and discuss everything without any kind of influence from the media.
The media loves what Trump is doing. Clickbait and headlines.
