Solid deal for both sides. Seems like both sides met in the middle for this one. Good to see this contract won’t be marching Sam Bennett right to unrestricted free agency.

Nice deal for both sides. I still think Sam has more to give and hoping for a breakout season this year.

Favorite Flame. Love his intensity, his grit, and by God I love watching him throw down with guys bigger than him with absolutely no fear. Here's to hoping the points come and he earns a bigger contract.

Great deal! I have a feeling Bennett and Lucic are gonna do well playing together.

I mentioned this in the Lucic thread and I need to just let it go but I am still disappointed the Kadri trade fell through. Had that deal been completed adding Kadri and Lucic to our roster that includes Bennett, Tkachuk and Hamonic would have made the Flames that much more annoying and tough to play against. It also would have guaranteed Bennett a spot on a wing with either Kadri or Backs and give him a better opportunity to increase his offensive production.

Really glad to see Bennett is still a part of the future here in Tre's eyes. I'm a fan of Bennett, and Good Bennett is one of my favourite Flames.
Cap and length are great, as in 2 years I think 25 year old Sam Bennett is likely what he is at that point. This contract is well-suited to look pretty decent on the 3rd or a steal in the top-6, so a great place for Bennett and the Flames to be. With names like Dube, Jankowski, Lucic, Czarnik, Backlund and Mangiapane potentially shaping a worst-case line with Bennett, that could be a great $2.55M 3rd liner.
But if he can put it all together he's a huge add to our top-6. Bennett is a beast when things are clicking. He can change the flow of the game on a dime, and we've seen him score some beautiful goals. The tools are there, which is why opinions of him on here are so divided. You can see it's there... but it's not always there.

One of the keys for Bennett I feel occurred last season is he somewhat broke through and has won over the fanbase. He is an extremely popular player for the way he plays and the Flames fans appreciate that. I think if there was still a ton of talk about him being a disappointing 4th overall pick he might be pushing for a change of scenery. It seems like he has become patient and is still confident that he will be the offensive star he was drafted to be.

“There is a lot I think I can bring. With my competitive edge, I think I’m going to be able to play that hard-nosed hockey. I still want to be a guy that puts up numbers and is offensive but can be relied on to play that two-way game. I don’t see there being any reason why I can’t reach that, and I’m really looking forward to this season and proving that I can.”
|
Quote:
“I think when you are in the top-six, you do get a little more opportunity and icetime and everything. I think if you ask anyone, they want that,“ Bennett said. “But that doesn’t mean I’d change my game. I would still play a hard-nosed, physical type of game, no matter what position or what role I’m playing.”

Quote:
“We showed it last year — we have the pieces to be one of the top teams in this league,” he said. “It was a huge disappointment (in the playoffs) last year with all the success we were having, and I know everyone still has a little bit of bitter taste in their mouth. It’s going to be a fun year — I definitely know that.”

I doubt he's ever going to fulfil his draft potential but the optimist in me still hopes he can become a quality 2nd line winger that's good for 20 goals, grit, and leadership intangibles.

How the hell is he still an RFA at the end of this?
The players collectively bargained this nonsense.
I mean, happy he is signed but this next CBA/lockout is going to be fun...

Look at Brett Connolly the 6th overall pick in 2010. He struggled up until this season when he was 26 and finally broke 20 goals. I think we may see Bennett have his offensive peak around age 25-28 so still a couple of years of growth ahead.

I don't understand this post.
It seems perfectly natural to me that the term, dollar figure and FA status at the conclusion of this deal are what they are, and I fail to see how this contract exemplifies any sort of contentiousness leading into the next CBA negotiation. From everything we continue to hear, primary items of negotiation are escrow and Olympic participation, and this contract does not reflect either.

You want players becoming UFA's after 4-5 seasons?

Best hitter on the team. He'll never live up to the expectation of being the #1C we all wanted. But he's done a fantastic job of sticking around by rounding out his game, cutting down the dumb penalties, yet still being the best physical force on the team.
If he can ever take the next step offensively, look out.

Can't believe he is only 23 years old still and going into his 5th full season! I'm happy he's signed and still a part of our future, here's to hoping he finds that offensive spark as well!

If he is this same player forever, I’m good with it.
Obviously I have high hopes for him based on his talent level. But I love he way he plays.
