I really hope for the best for that guy. I was one of the few that thought he was going to be better than Demko at the time of the draft. He has great size and is a great athlete, but he lacked confidence. It looked like he was starting to turn it around last season, but it was too little too late for him with this organization.

I thought he was solid last season tbh. Outplayed Schneider in the ECHL.

Schneider, in turn outplayed Gillies in the AHL when called up, because McDonald was hurt at that exact time.

Wish him the best.

Ironically last season was likely his best in the Flames organization. It just came too late and the early seasons were really, really bad.

I saw him play a lot in his draft year and thought he was a great pick at the time. He never got his game back after his injury.

Sounds like a chance for a fresh start with another organization. The Avalanche are likely to promote AHL All-Star Pavel Francouz to be Grubauer's backup. They're also bringing in a Swedish kid, Adam Werner. Depending on how Werner develops, McDonald might be bouncing back and forth with the ECHL affiliate.

Yeah in hindsight this was a real ####ter of a pick. Wish the best for him and hope he has a fun season.

The curious thing is that even though the comparison has always been McDonald vs Demko, it's not like Demko has proven himself yet at the NHL level, five years after they were drafted. While he seems poised to take another step this year, none of the goalies in the 2014 draft have broken through as of yet.

Yeah I mean they're goalies so they take more time. But while Demko will be pushing for the back-up position in the NHL this training camp McDonald will probably be splitting games between the AHL-ECHL on a minor league contract again.

Demko's played more NHL games than McDonald's played AHL.
