Default Stockton Heat 2016/17 General Discussion

So with the mass exodus of RFA's today thought we should get a thread going to discuss next season now that there is a nucleus of players to build from.

Several guys will push for spots from this list. (we hope)

Shinkaruk, Poirier, Hathaway, Hamilton, Janko, Pribyl, Kulak, etc.

Going to be a young team again, which is good IMO.

Since they cut loose several Heat main stays today, it will be interesting to see if they bring any back on AHL deals, and it will als be interesting to see if they bring in any AHL "ringers". Not this teams style I suppose, but we will see.

I assume the only player listed above that has to clear waivers to get to the Heat is Freddie Hamilton, once he is re-signed.

I for one am really looking forward to the goaltending battle. Usually it's just one actual Flame prospect goalie and several AHL fodder goalies holding down the fort. Now we will have 3 legitimate prospects fighting for ice time and at least one at a time will be down in the ECHL getting more starts there to stay busy.

I'm also wondering if the coaching change in Calgary will have a trickle down effect to this team, seeing as how Huska will be matching that system for the Heat as well.

I am disappointed about Arnold not returning. I really feel he was badly misused by Huska.

I wonder if any of our 2016 draft picks will play in the AHL this year.

The only two eligible for the AHL would be Lindstrom and Tuulola I believe.

Tuulola seemed to be interested in the idea of playing in the AHL. I'd love to see both he and Lindstrom come over and get acclimated to the North American rink.

I don't watch the AHL, so I'm interested in hearing how he was misused in your eyes.

Was he buried in the defensive zone too much like Stajan was with the Flames this past year & like Chiasson was with the Sens?

Was he played too much with the dregs of the team in Stockton as well?

For the last 2 years Arnold seemed to regularly play 3rd-4th line minutes at ES and was very heavily relied upon to play a pure defensive role. When injuries happened other players were used at centre in the top 6. Strangely despite having little offensive time at ES Huska would often put him on the PP. I can't imagine that it would be easy to be successful on the PP when that is the majority of your offensive time. The only way he was used ocrrectly IMO was as the teams top PK guy.

Falkovsky was in his second year of draft eligibility and turns 20 before the end of the year, so he could go to the AHL, even though he was drafted out of the CHL.

Fox and Mattson could also back out of their NCAA commitments and would be AHL eligible. Based on how we've seen the Flames handle NCAA-bound players in the past, I'd consider this very unlikely. They'd be more likely to decide to jump to the CHL, like Sieloff did after he was drafted. Fox is going to Harvard and Mattson to UND, so I doubt either of them will change their minds about college ... nor do I think the Flames management would ask them to do it.

Mattson won't go to UND this year, but play for Bloomington in the USHL for another year ... unless the Flames convince him otherwise like they did with Jankowski.

can't see any 2016 picks going to Stockton. I wouldn't be against bringing Tuulola or Lindstrom over, but in that case, you better hope somebody selects them in the CHL Import Draft ... pro hockey in the AHL would be too big of a step. Would rather try and bring Ollas Mattsson.

What are the odds the Flames see F. Hamilton as either the #4 centre or the 13/14 forward?

Considering Arnold was anchoring the top line for his championship team in the NCAA, I'd say Huska definitely under utilized him offensively. Gaudreau and Hayes didn't seem to be struggling offensively by having Arnold on their line.

Yes he's got a solid defensive game, but that doesn't mean you need to restrict him from developing his offense further. If anything a coach SHOULD be putting players in a position to develop weaker parts of their game while in the AHL. Not decide they should be defensive specialists at 22 years of age.

If you have a Forward prospect who is great offensively, the Flames insist on teaching them to play in their own zone effectively. Why should it be any different for a Forward prospect who is great defensively?

Looking at the line-up I think we'll have a fun team to watch next year. Hopefully also a more successful one.

Mangiapane - Jankowski - Shinkaruk

This line needs to happen. Tenacious, fast, smart and all offensively gifted. All while allowing Shinkaruk to continue transitioning to RW.

I'm curious to see if they play Pribyl at center. I remember an interview where Pascal talked about him being able to play that position, and then low and behold they don't qualify Shore, Arnold or Elson which just opened things up wide open down the middle in Stockton.

Hopefully the Flames graduate 2-3 defensemen this season too. Maybe not right away, but over the course of the year.

That way they can happily move on from overpaid veteran depth Dmen like Wideman, Engelland and Smid, plus open up spots the following year in Stockton for Bruce, Falkovsky and Hickey to turn pro and/or for Mattsson to come over.

Would love to see Kulak, Kylington at the very least really step forward this year.

One or two of those forwards such as Hathaway, Shinkarik or Hamilton may make the Flames as well. We'll need a couple of other signings such as who we cut loose on AHL contracts.
Players Not Qualified
Shore, Elson, Ortio, Van Brabant, Arnold, Agostino and Poulin.
We also have UFAs Grant and Nakladal. I guess Ortio could still be back with the Heat depending how things shake out as well. That's nine players who are doubtful if not gone.

Very surprising that they didn't qualify Elson. He is the definition of character and would probably be a great captain for the Heat.

Yes, very. Maybe they are planning on offering him an AHL contract.

With all the forwards dropping like flies. I hope Arnold comes back somehow.

I have a feeling we are going to see more guys with skills like Mitchell Heard get contracts rather than skills Derek Grant. A bunch of guys aged 20-23 will receive camp invites and be signed to AHL contracts to fill out the bottom of the roster.
