I actually kind of worry about Stone’s quality of life after hockey. He’s sacrificed a lot to play in meaningful games for the Knights.

So what?

Choose only one:

1. Fair competition in the playoffs.
2. A bunch of talking heads get something to talk about on deadline day.

I'm voting #1 AINEC.

I choose trade deadline since it helps the weaker teams, which the Flames will be for the next several years.

What's the point? By the time they get to be a strong team, they'll just lose to someone who's using LTIR to cheat the system.

Fix the rules, not the games!

He could've tapped out at any time.

Oh boo fn hoo for poor Stone! I got hit by impaired drivers twice and my quality of life is absolute #### but it would certainly be a lot more manageable with millions of dollars in the bank instead of the square root of F all. I am sure he will be just fine.

Can a player choose to play through an injury (with the team's blessing) even if they are not medically not cleared? In Stone's case could his injury still be serious enough that he can legitimately be on LTIR but still decide to play in the playoffs, or does he need to be medially cleared?

If I understand correctly, players can be medically cleared while they are still injured, as long as they are physically able to play and playing won't make the injury worse.

Part of the trouble is that hockey players don't like admitting they're in pain, and doctors have to rely on their patients to tell them how much pain they're in. Too often, the result reminds me of Bobcat Goldthwait falling down stairs (in one of the Police Academy movies, I think):

‘That didn't hurt! That didn't hurt! That didn't hurt! … That hurt.’

The issue is that the combination of greed/wanting to win on the part of the team, hockey culture where you are supposed to play through pain and suck it up even at the risk of long term injury and indifference on the part of the league leads to bad medical choices or calculated ones. It leads to Sean Monahan playing an ineffective game here. Or players not playing when they could if the team tells them so.
