I left Calgary for Red Deer 9 years ago and I wouldn't move back to the big city if you tripled my salary. Red Deer has everything you would want in a city except the traffic, NHL hockey and maybe a Bass Pro Shop.
I can get to work in under 10 minutes, I know most of my neighbors and have a big yard. Just 3 of many things I couldn't say about Calgary life.
Nice pace of life, smaller town feel with big city amenities. Works for me.

I agree, my family and I really like it here. Big enough to have everything you need. Yet small enough that you can get anywhere in town in less than 15 minutes. And if you do want something else, Calgary or Edmonton is only 90 minutes away.

my in-laws live in Red Deer and I enjoy the city - golf is much cheaper in that area than calgary. most stores in calgary/edm are in RD, pretty good minor hockey system. close to sylvan - city has lots of stuff going for it.
if you were single and looking for a vibrant nightlife, then RD is likely not the place for you.

I was always a big fan of Mojave Grill, just off Hwy 2 on 67th (?). The one in Calgary at the Deerfoot Casino is garbage, but that one was good.

Hahaha, when I moved up here I lived with a buddy. This was the place we went on my first night in Red Deer. There was two waitresses working. One had a huge tongue piercing and could hardly talk. The other one had a big balck eye.
Welcome to Central Alberta.

Depends on your interpretation of "vibrant". If your a single male in Red Deer. Plenty of places to go in the evenings on the weekend to meet woman. If you have more sophisticated tastes like a Frazier Crane, then yeah, Red Deer isn't the place for you.

I'm not young and single anymore but I've heard for years that if you are a male in this town that has anything going for them the pickings in Red Deer are abundant. I don't know how many couples I've met here where I've thought, wtf is she doing with that loser? Slim pickings for ladies but it seems to be a ratio well in the boys favor.

Oh, and back on topic, I would highly recommend La Casa Pergola. A little pricey but great food.

My mom took me out of a birthday dinner there, I was served rancid steak.
I mentioned to the waitress that the steak in the fajitas had an odd taste, to which she replied; "Yeah I have been getting a lot of that today..."
The fataing steak was rotten, I will never eat there again.

I live in Edmonton...it has nothing to do with comparing it to Calgary. I just haven't had the best interactions every people from Red Deer. Kind of like how people from Lethbridge are all old, or college kids. In my experience people from Red Deer are all mouth breathers. And that includes the ones I'm related too.

I'll admit, Red Deer has its fair share of ######bags. However, its ratio is no different than in any other community or city across the world. Saying different would be a skewed bias, plain and simple.
On a positive note, at least you didn't lower yourself to their level by making some silly and broad generalization.
