He certainly could have, but it looks like he got new gear instead. The stuff he is wearing now is from CCM's 2021 designs.

I wonder if Markstrom will wear those pads when the Flames wear their black-C alternate jerseys on Sunday.

Maybe I am crazy, but I seem to remember some statistical evidence that Colored pads make a goalie worse- something about shooters being more easily able to pick out contrasting pads on ice from their peripherals. They look nice, but I dont actually care about how they look lol

I believe it. In a split second getting a shot off its easier to distinguish from the white netting.

Are there any restrictions on colors or designs on goalie pads?
if not, surprised that no goalie has tried a netting or mesh design (camouflage) to play mind tricks on the shooters!

Here is the article discussing it a bit- it was Fleury's change away from the super yellow pads that generated the interest.

Yup.

Many goalies believe darker equipment also makes it easier for shooters to quickly identify where their gear ends and the net begins. In a game where every half inch and tenth of a second matters, it's not an advantage some are willing to surrender.
Marc-Andre Fleury was known for signature yellow pads early in his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but ditched them during the 2007-08 season after an Ottawa optometrist pointed out yellow was a color the human eye recognizes fastest, meaning shooters were able to distinguish his equipment from the background faster than other colors...but there are still some goaltending coaches at the professional level that mandate white equipment.

I love how Vancouver is pretty much laying claim to every colour design in league history.
navy-green-white
yellow-red-black
navy-light blue-silver-red
back to
navy-green-white
Honestly when the Canucks switched to the V jerseys in 1978 the only team in the league with red and yellow was the Flames in Atlanta.

You seriously cannot see the resemblance? It is literally a variation using the same colours and basic pattern.
In any event, I LOVE IT.

Our beer league goal netting and boards are so discolored, white pads wouldn't work.

Yes both have black, red, and yellow on them...but that's about where the similarities stop

Tricking shooters with white pads might work in beer leagues where some ankle bender has cataracts and is colour blind. Phil Kessel knows very well where the hot dogs are and where the net is.
These days, goalies might like white pads so they can find the puck easier when there's a scramble. Secondary to that, they don't want the puck to get lost (again, in a scramble) and a delayed whistle by a ref happens.

They also both have red and yellow bands flaring inside below the knees, and there are no substantial changes beyond colour-placement. The only significant difference is that the principle colour of the bottoms and sides is black, whereas in Vancouver it was white.

this discussion is more compelling than the winning percentage vs points percentage debate, but not by much
