Default Batch 1: Including rules for bidding

It is time for UFA batches.

We will be going through these in “batches” of players up for bid.
I think we will probably end up having 5 batches, but it may change. The second to last batch will be an open one – for any remaining players, for all teams that have cap space for their bids. The last batch will be a second open batch, with the only difference being teams don’t need to have the cap.

Here are the rules for bidding on a player
- You must have all players on 1 way contracts on your CPHL team. If we see that you have stashed a 1 way player in the AHL, all your offers will be voided
- You must have ALL players at or above the ratings threshold and 23 or below on your CPHL team. If we see one in the AHL your offers will be voided
- All offers must include ALL information required, as outlined below. If you fail to include something, your offers will be voided
- You MUST have cap space for the first year CPHL value of any offer, except for the very final batch, as noted above.
- Submit your offers on the above players by sending an email to cphlufa@yahoo.com. These offers should include:
o The name of the player(s)
o The term of the contract
o The per year value of the contract
o The AHL% you are offering (AHL% must be in 5 percent increment up to 50 per cent. You can also offer 1 way deals. You cannot offer 55% to 95%).
o The player will be awarded to the team that offers the most committed dollars. Committed dollars= years of contract*per year value*AHL%
o Total per year CPHL value of offers being made
o Cap available (offer value must be at or less than cap available)
o Minimum per year value is $500K, max is $10M

Let’s look at a couple examples.
This is what your emails should look like:
The Minnesota Wild submit the following bids:
Bill Bumface: 2 years @ $5M/season, AHL 50%
Hockey McStickFace: 1 year @ $10M/season, AHL 10%
Total CPHL value of offers: $15M ($5M+$10M)
Total Cap Available: $16M

Let’s now add another example and see what team would win the player.
The Boston Bruins submit the following bids:
Bill Bumface: 3 years @ 6M/season, AHL 30%
Hockey McStickface: 2 years @ 4M/season/1 way

The competing offers are calculated as follows:

Bill Bumface:
Wild: $5M (2*5.0*0.5)
Boston: $5.4M (3*6.0*0.3)
Boston wins the player

Hockey McStickFace
Wild: 1M (1*10*0.1)
Boston: 8M (2*4*100%)
Boston wins again.

Now, if two teams make bids and end up with the same committed dollars then the player will be awarded to the team lowest in the standings from last year.

Here is the key thing:
When making sure you have enough cap space for your offers this is based on the CPHL per year $ value of the contract you are offering. When a player is awarded though it is based on the Committed Dollar calculation outlined above. if you make any trades AFTER you submit your bids but BEFORE the batch deadline, you must STILL have enough cap space for your bids, or re-submit.

Make sense? If not – ask questions! This is important stuff.

I didn't include all the 70 forwards as there were too many. So I included the ones that seemed to be the most attractive overall. D is 73 and above.

Will be an interesting UFA period in the CPHL.

The league as a whole has $155.3M of open cap space.

1 - with $25M+ in cap room.
2 - with $15M+ in cap space
1 - with $10M+
7 - with $5M > $10M
6 - with $2M > $5M
9 - with $0M > $2M
2 - Teams over the cap

This off-season has been a real shift in lot of ways as it seems like the cap crunch is really having an impact.
Which I think is good because the entire point of a cap and the grids is to force teams to make hard choices.
What I’m seeing this year is that
- Bad contracts handed out in previous years are really hurting teams now
- Players overpaid are much harder to move. Even really good players are tough to find a market for if they have a high salary
- The free agent class is looking better than most years, though it is quite thin within forwards. The blueline crop though is really strong with some high end guys and a lot of depth

I’m always interested in how the game evolves and this off-season feels like another shift in some ways.

Yeah agreed. Obviously the better experienced GM’s are way better at judging their cap situation. I’m amazed teams like Minny, NJ, Philly, etc, could stay within the cap while I was at -15.75 mil. A good lesson to me and the other GM’s in the same situation for next year

I had to trade a ton of really good players this summer to get there though, and not sure I really got the expected value
AO
Doughty
Perry
Trouba
Patches

But I am lucky to have guys that can step in and play cheap. That's the key - like the NHL you need to fill out your roster with entry level players or cheap free agents so you can pay your top guys. When the top players come off entries they jump from like 1.35 to 8M in one year. So for me, with that happening to Barkov and Mackinnon that's like +$15M right there

That’s true, I guess I didn’t expect players to be so expensive. Bad judgment on my part. Karlsson, Marchessault, Couturier, TT, Matheson, Parayko, etc were all on very cheap deals and their prices skyrocketed.

And then you have teams with no valuable assets who can make the CPHL Finals...

Would you guys say the typical AAV on these UFA bid contracts are lower than their UFA grid amounts or higher?

Based on the teams that have cap space and the volume of players available in the 70-73 range....I'd say lower this year.

Looking at players on my roster that signed as UFA previously, it looks like it used to be higher.

There is usually a range. Some guys go for really high prices but there are usually some real steals too.

Ratings primarily being tied to the most recent year performance has changed things too.
You gotta think through whether to lock someone down for 3 years, based on what could be their best year.
Similarly, if a player has an off year, that's not a terrible thing if they are on an expiring deal as it is a chance to sign them long term. If they rebound - boom - now you have a cheap good player.
Even when to sign your guys out of the ECHL is key.
I signed Boeser really early as I figured, as a college guy, I would time it so his first AHL deal expired and I could sign him for another 3 years on the cheap before he established himself.
Well that didn't work as instead his AHL deal expired following his amazing rookie year. So I never even got a single cheap NHL year out of him. Totally blew it.

These are all key parts of the game now. Managing contracts and terms can make or break how you can build your team.

Just for accuracy, max bid allowed is 9.99M. I don't think the system accepts 10M

That's the deadline.

The Islanders made zero bids.
