Default Cross Platform Minecraft

Just wondering if anyone has been able to join a PC server from either a PS4 or Switch with the latest updates. I know cross platform play is supposed to be working but I can't figure out if I am able to join a PC server. Any assistance is appreciated.

First thing you need to know is there are 2 versions of minecraft.

Original version for PC = Java

New Version for all systems = Bedrock

Crossplay for Bedrock works on all systems, I created servers for both versions on my server at home to test and had no issues connecting to Bedrock on all systems.

Here is what I am trying to do. My brother in law in the states wants to play minecraft with my kids. He created a bedrock PC server but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to connect to it on PS4 or Switch. I was able to get connected to him on a realm he created on the switch but still not able to enter his server information.

On the PS4 the server tab says 'favorites coming soon' or something to that effect and on switch it just lists 5 servers but I do not have the ability to join any other servers.

I have logged into my Microsoft account on both platforms and I have added him as a friend but it doesn't show him as online when he is in his server.

I have Playstation Plus and Switch Online and both consoles have the most up to date version of the game installed.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I haven't done it but I assume creating a bedrock Minecraft server on PC is similar to the Java edition (which I've done), the server runs on the computer itself and is within the local network, so they'd have to open the proper port on their firewall and port forward to the right internal IP address, and they'd have to know their external IP address to give to you.

Might just be easier to sign up for Minecraft Realms, for like $8 a month you get a server that 10 ppl can play on and you don't have to host it yourself, no firewall shenanigans to worry about and it's up 24/7

There's also server hosting available from ppl other than Microsoft, depending on how customizable they want the server that might even be a better option.

https://server.pro/
https://ggservers.com/minecrafthosting
https://aternos.org/en/

(I haven't used any of these so I can't attest to their quality)

I have no complaints with Minecraft Realms. It's easy to use and control the server, and you can swap worlds on the fly. Takes a little while to load up if no one has been on it for a day or two, but only once have I ever had lag/glitches from the server which is pretty good.

If you want an invite to my realms server, let me know! I've got open slots as only my wife and I still play on it.

Photon hit the nail on the head. Check out a video on port forwarding.

I have all the server details but I do not have a way to connect to the server from the PS4 or Switch. I will take some snapshots of the screen from my TV to show the issue that I am having.

I really appreciate the help with this, sorry for my technological ineptitude. I feel this is much more difficult than it needs to be...

It would be my kids so I wouldn't recommend it, they are kleptomaniacs...

It's nothing you can do from your end, it's something that he has to do on his end to his home network, assuming it's the port forwarding we're talking about that's the root cause.

Unless he says he's already done that and says other people can connect to his server fine, then it's something else.

By not connect I mean I do not have somewhere on either console where I can enter server information. The internet tells me I should be able to but I can't figure it out. The image in the link below has an add server option but I do not have that option on PS4 or Switch. The consoles both tell me the game is up to date so I should have the option but I don't.

Hm maybe it's not possible to add custom servers?

https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/...ation-TM-4-FAQ

"CAN I CONNECT TO A SERVER?

Servers are not available on PS4™ at this time.

CAN I CONNECT TO A CUSTOM SERVER NOT IN THE SERVER LIST?

Due to console platform policy, you cannot connect to a server that is not in the servers list. "

Raekwon when you did it was it all on your local network?

Your googlefu is much stronger than mine. That answers my question about PS4 then and the realms as well.

It was but I'm pretty sure I tested both internal and external addresses. Firing up the PS4 and will test it again through my phone hot spot later

Ok so yeah PS4 only has Lan but iPhone etc has the add server option. You could always play on a phone or ipad and connect a PS4 controller or wait for them to actually add it in the PS4 version.

Other than that there were some videos with crazy methods to make it work but it would be on the server side, not sure how good it works etc but here is the info.

Spoiler!

I also saw some DNS shenanigans you could do to get the PS4 to connect to a custom server, but it's getting into the networking weeds for sure.

That it won't even connect to Realms, that's pretty poor of them.

I remember now I had it all up and running tested on PC and iOS then ran to shoppers and picked up the physical copy for PS4 installed it and couldn't play.

It does say coming soon so with any luck they open it up in the near future, this is Sony's fault I assume but now that they have opened up cross platform Mojang needs to step it up.
