Tkachuk or Hamonic if I had to pick today. Who knows what this will look like when the actual decision is to be made.

And with that thinking, Bennett stands as much chance as Tkachuk and Monny as being the Flames next Captain, which is at least 4 years away if not longer.
|
I'm sorry but what has Bennett done over the last 3 seasons that indicated he will:
1) stop taking stupid penalties
2) come anywhere close to Monahan and Tkachuk levels of production
Genuinely curious because as far as I've seen he has gotten worse since leaving Backlund line, is taking as many or more penalties than ever (often from being out of position/ getting beat) and hasn't really had any periods of sustained offensive production

No kidding - at this point, I'm not sure Bennett is in the NHL 4 years from now, let alone our captain.
It seems to be clear they're grooming Monahan to be the next captain. They've given A's to Brouwer, Wideman, Russell, Engelland, and only grudgingly (and infrequently), Backlund.
Tkachuk should have an A next year. And he probably should be the next captain, IMO. But it's going to be Monahan, and that's a fine choice.

I think Backlund is the next A (next 1-2 years replacing Brouwer.)
In 5 Years (or once Gio is gone) I see
Monahan- C
Tkachuk- A
Doug Hamilton- A

I believe Monahan's serious nature, his ability to articulate well in public, and his outstanding performance, should make him and excellent choice for future captain.
IMO Tkachuk is too young, and I wouldn't want to burden him at this stage of his development with all the demands of being captain.

I can definitely see Tkachuk with an 'A' or a 'C' on his jersey in the coming years. Maybe I'm wrong in that it has zero impact, but say there was a choice to make a change next year, do we really want Tkachuk having a letter on his jersey for his final contract year of his ELC? Won't that drive up his contract price? Give Backlund the 'A' next year and keep the others the same.
I don't know if Monahan is outspoken enough to be a Captain, assistant for sure, but I think he may be too passive for a Captain's role. Is he going to be the guy to stand-up in the room and help motivate a team? I can see Tkachuk doing that, not so much Monahan. I think his skills, demeanor, professionalism etc. make him a perfect role model and excellent assistant captain however.

LOL.
Bennett is going to be lucky to be getting a paycheque from the Flames in 2 years, let alone a letter on his jersey.

You don't give a guy that plays Tkachuk's game the C. The C is supposed to be that guy who sets a good example on the ice and has a lot on their plate. You want Tkachuk to be able to play that pesty irritating mouthy game without worrying about what example he is setting or even care. Monahan will make an ideal next Captain, leave Tkachuk to being a power forward pest with nothing but that on his plate.

Monahan-C
Tkachuk-A
Gaudreau-A
This is obviously many years down the line. Hamonic would also be a solid choice for the A as well. I think Johnny has more leadership qualities that we give him credit for. Leads by example (obviously) and is extremely competitive. I would have zero reservations in giving him a letter

I'm not sure Tkachuk is a guy we want talking to the refs like someone with a letter does. I absolutely love the guy but Monahans serious nature swings it for him.
Like Dissentowner said, let Tkachuk play his style of game without worrying about what example he's setting

I do kinda agree with dissentowner. Tkachuk's fiesty / pesty game doesn't lend itself well to having to deal with refs / other players / etc. Yes, he's probably a better "in-the-room" leader...but as a spokesman and diplomat....probably Monahan is the safer (read: more boring) choice.
While we're talking about Tkatchuk's future -> I think when his career is over he should be the head of the Department of Player Safety!

Monahan was the captain of his Junior team, and his been an alternate in Calgary since he was 20-years-old. Far too much is made by fans about the relationship between outspokenness and leadership. Joe Sakic captained two Stanley Cup teams loaded with Hall-of-Famers. Nik Lidstrom took over from one of the greatest leaders in sports and also captained his team to a Stanley Cup.
Tkachuk does not need to be a team captain to lead and motivate the team. Monahan has clearly been groomed to replace Giordano. It is patently obvious who the next Flames captain will be.

I can just imagine Captain Tkachuk chirping the ref...
Probably best to have an even keeled player like Monahan or Gaudreau as Captain.

I think Monahan has the inside track. I'm still a fan of the old school grizzled vet captain, though.

I'm in Camp Monahan because we all know, 'Who Can? The Garbageman Can!"
But if Tkachuk was the Captain? Ahahahaha! That would be an epic troll-job on the League!
People would go insane!
