Loved Pillar, but he's the type of guy you move rather than keep when you're starting a rebuild. Good trade.

Not sure why the Giants would do this. They need to be rebuilding and getting younger too.

Saw Orozco play for the Canadians a few summers ago. That's about all I know about him.

They are like the Flames circa 2010-2013. Everyone knows their time is up, except them.

They do know it - I think they are considering trading Bumgarner this summer.

Sounds like Brito has all the tools just hasn't put it together yet. The quote I read was that he is one of the fastest players in baseball.
Also sounds like Hansen will be joining the big league team in Cleveland. Alford has also been recalled.
I am curious to see who gets sent down and moved off the 40 man next week when Vladdy joins the team.

Speculation from Shulman says that Gurriel Jr. is on the hot seat right now and may be the one sent down if Hansen joins the big roster very soon.
As to who goes down when Vladdy Jr. gets here. It will probably be between the one who survives the 1st demotion if Hansen gets added to the roster. So likely either Gurriel Jr or Urena.

Grichuk extended by the Jays.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Randal Grichuk have agreed on a $52-million, five-year contract extension that covers three free-agent seasons, according to two industry sources.

Interesting move. I don't mind what Grichuk brings at all to be honest. He strikes out a bit but he has consistent 20 HR ability and brings good defence whether in RF or CF. 12 million a year for that is good value IMO.

I'd call it a puzzling move. While I don't have the eye of a baseball exec, I'd sum up my opinion that his upside is of an average MLB player overall. By locking him up, they likely have confidence he'll develop into something much better. The head scratcher is, why now? Why not wait until year end when it's a little more clear what direction he goes?

Not a coincidence it lands on the same day as a fan favourite vet getting traded to mute the complaints of the sell off.
Contract imo is very tradeable down the road given his age and flashes so far, so not much risk in the Jays doing it.

Good news, pitching.
Bad news, hitting.
I think this is going to be a familiar thing throughout the season. And for Buck & Pat, or any other talking head who believes the hitting will come around, I just don't see that happening.
I think the pitching, although it won't maintain this great pace, will continue to be at least half-decent but the batting will with few exceptions continue to be pretty dire throughout the balance of this year.
I'll be shocked if the team batting average this year is higher than 245 (they're at 183 now).

Offense has been brutal for sure.
The core of this teams future offense is still in the minors though, for the most part. So that's not too concerning yet.
The pitching is what I want to see.
Stroman, Sanchez, Thornton, Borucki, Paulino, SRF and Merryweather are all potentially key pieces of the future rotation when/if the team gets competitive again. Obviously not all of them will be here still, but there is a good chance some of them will be key pieces moving forward.

Not likely. He is what he is. 20+ home runs, decent defense in the outfield and now being paid 12 million dollars a season. He was a 2 WAR outfielder last year. Similar WAR outfielders are Gregory Polanco (~7 mil/season), Shin Soo Choo (20 mil/season) and Brett Gardner (was making ~11 mil now at 7.5 mil/season).
They barely have anyone under contract next year. They need to fill positions. And they're going to find apparent value while filling those positions.

I think for Richard Urena although he may not have a long term future on this team, I see a good player in him already.
Don't know if he'll ever become a good hitter, but he is good defensively. Seems to be fundamentally sound and has a very strong and accurate arm too.

I expect Stroman and Sanchez are likely the next two players traded....
I would bet both are gone by the trade deadline.

Day game alert - first pitch is 2:07pm
Seems like a late start for getaway day? Baltimore's home opener is tomorrow at 3:00pm EST, so starting the game today at 4:00pm EST just seems odd. Why not a 1:00pm EST start like normal?
