Flames Stajan excited about the upcoming season, sees upside in this roster

https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/staj...er/c-290623348

Great read.

Quote:
"(Sidney) Crosby just turned 30,'' the versatile centreman is protesting, with mock severity, following a pick-up, hour-long on-ice stretch of the legs out at COP on Tuesday late morning.

"I'm 33.

"So I'm like: 'He's only three years younger than me …'

"Yeah, I've been around a while. But sometimes the way people talk you'd think I was 10 years older (than Crosby); that I was 40."
Lots in there to discuss, but one thing is for certain, he recognizes what his role can be, and Matt has more to give. I'm rooting for him, one of my fave guys on the team.

Probably the best roster the Flames have had in Stajan's eight years here...

Wait, Stajan has played eight years here now? And this next one will be his ninth? My god.

I take Stajan here over Phaneuf here in a heartbeat.

This is likely Stajan's last year with the Flames - given his contract is expiring, his age and with younger guys pushing. Hope he has a great year and gets to experience a deep playoff run!

The Stajans have also been pretty involved in the community. Never a bad thing to have good people in the organization.

Stajan has proven himself to be one of those "good" vets that you want on your team -- willing to mentor the young guys and to play any role asked of him. Seems like he's very well liked in the locker room as well.

On this roster, Phaneuf would be a bottom pairing defenceman with Stone. Mind bottling.

Could you imagine paying $7M for that? I cant believe he gets paid that much.

10 games away from 500 with the Flames. 65 games away from 1000 in the NHL.

If he plays the full season, he'll pass McDonald, Conroy, and Hunter on the Flames all-time games played list, and will be 12th overall behind his first NHL roommate, Joe Nieuwendyk.

Prediction: If Stajan is the 13th forward, Flames win the division. If Stajan is an every day roster player, Flames are a wildcard team.

I still remember I think it was after his second season here and it was a miserable one for him that Matt basically stood up in front of the media on garbage bag day and put his performance on himself.

I give him credit because I think he had a rough summer of self reflection and he came back with the realization that he wasn't going to be a goal scorer on his team so he'd better learn to be better in other areas, and he did, he's a solid fourth line guy that you can trust late in the game to be simple.

He also went from being a bit of a distraction to a positive locker room guy by all accounts.

Its rare in pro athletics that you see a truly stand up guy. He's one of them.

Stajan is a very good fourth line centre. He has been held down by some linemates in the past, notably Bollig. But you seem to think Jankowski, a guy with virtually zero NHL experience, is automatically better.

Stajan really seems like a good dude and likeable person. He is often referred to by his younger teammates as a role model or someone they look up to. Versteeg mentioned he didn't know him before last season and now Stajan is one of his best friends.

To me that is the only thing that makes sense why we have had this overpaid 4th liner on the team for EIGHT seasons. I was disappointed Burke re-signed him 3 years ago and that has proven again to be an overpaid contract. Last year with Bouma and Brouwer they made up the most expensive 4th line in hockey.

It hasn't impacted the Flames that much thanks to having rookie scale contracts in the top 6 over the past 4 years and the fact Backlund is paid to be a 3rd line centre and is in fact an elite #2 borderline #1.

Stajan did score perhaps the most important goal I have ever witnessed live when he put the Flames ahead for the first time in the game and for good against the Canucks in game 6 2015.

As for this season which may be his last in the league I see Stajan being the 4th line C or LW and I also see him the most likely victim to the press box if Jankowski forces his way on the team.

Stajan is a good leader, but this needs to be his last season in the Flames line-up. Can't spend that kind of money for a 4th line center.
