Coyotes press release say they also gave up Mike Sislo who was an AHL player for them.

I wonder if this is another Jimmy Vesey situation (i.e. the Sabres acquiring a pending College UFA in hopes of signing him), or another Nolan Vesey situation (i.e. acquiring a pending College UFA who has agreed to sign with them)?

Fasching seems like a lot to give up on a long-shot, unless they weren't going to qualify him anyway.

Looks like a prayer to me, Fasching has had minimal impact in the AHL so far at less than half a PPG and at 23 this year is just about waiver eligible, I don't see his value as being much more than a 6th or 7th rounder. Then again Hickey never really took that step forward to become a dominant NCAA player either so maybe they will sign him and that's his value.

Just moving pieces on the board for an imminent Karlsson acquisition.

Obviously buffalo snagged up Hickey rights to trade him to Edmonton for pool party...

Or, Eichel vouched for him from their BU days.

Nice fit for Hickey in Buffalo. Outside of Brendan Guhle, there's not an awful lot of blueline depth in their system.

Well Hickey's agent just put out a message saying he is excited to be acquired by the Sabres.

Guess we will hear about a signing shortly.

Don't you mean Brad Hickey? Does he know Tom Erixon?

I used to think really highly of Hickey as a prospect, but his progression at the college level was incremental at best and regressive at worst.

So the Sabres gave up a 22 year old guy that they had up at the NHL for a look see for the rights to sign Hickey before he became a UFA.

Stats wise 22 year old Fasching seems to be pretty much even with 24 year old Spencer Foo.

They must have a high expectation for Hickey.

Also seems to indicate that there is a code about poaching NCAA UFAs

Not sure I'd agree

Fasching has been out of school for three seasons and has now been traded twice.

Pro season 1 - 12 points in 37 games at the AHL level and 1 point in 10 games at the NHL level

Pro season 2 - 30 points in 69 games at the AHL level and no points in 5 games at the NHL level

That's .39 ppg AHL and .13 ppg NHL

Spencer Foo has only one pro season

AHL 39 points in 62 games .63 ppg
NHL 2 points in 4 games .50 ppg

Given Foo's ppg splits these players aren't comparable, and if you dig deeper in Foo's emergence in season on they're not even close.

Foo first 30 games ... 6-7-13 for .43
Foo last 32 games ... 14-12-26 for .84

Fasching was also one of Tim Murray's big gamble. Remember this trade?

2014-Mar-05 LA Kings trade Hudscon Fasching and Nicolas Deslauriers to Buffalo Sabres for Jonathan Parker, Brayden McNabb, round 2 pick in the 2014 draft (Alex Lintuniemi) and round 2 pick in the 2015 draft (Erik Cernak)

at the time the focal point of that trade was Fasching for Buffalo as McNabb for Deslauriers is about equal trade value. Less than 8 months after he was drafted by the Kings in the 4th round, Murray was so impressed by Fasching's breakout freshman season and world juniors he thought he was essentially worth 2 second round picks.

Well time with the Sabres organization would prove he wasn't. There was even some speculation that the Sabres were not going to qualify Fasching and let him walk as an UFA. Partly due to performance partly due to get buried on the depth chart.

I don't think there is much trade value in Fasching.

He's not worth any hype. He started out great, but his college numbers flat lined. He may still be an NHLer because he has decent size and can skate, but he certainly isn't a hype worthy prospect.

He's an excellent skater with a very good point shot, and he's a pretty big body that uses it effectively without the puck. But his first pass is kind of questionable and he doesn't have any real ofensive skill IMO. I would compare him to a #6D like Mike Stone, albeit better skating and worse shooting.
