My wife's aunt watches barely any regular season and doesn't really have a team. Then when playoffs hit she watches as many games as she possibly can and cheers for all the Canadian teams. It's pretty crazy to see a barely casual fan become a hardcore NHL fan for playoffs.

If there is a God, the Oilers will lose. Then if there is a God the following will happen
1) Draisaitl signs in Edmonton for 8.5 million a year (seems possible, his second year was better than Tarasenko's and his third year was better than Tarasenko's)
2) McDavid signs for 15 million dollars a season.
3) Russell is signed to a 5 year deal for 4.15 million a year to solidify the defence long term.
4) Pitlick is signed by Vegas and is the player the Oilers lose in the expansion draft
I would say everything on that list outside of Russell has a decent chance of happening. Then over the next two seasons, if Talbot could start 142 regular season games minimum over that time and then sign an 8 year 48 million dollar deal and then have a bit of a slowdown to Garon levels, all would be right in the world.
