Yeah, it ain't gonna be standard trek formula. Who cares! That was amazeballs. I am enraged that I have to wait a whole week to see more. Bryan Fuller continues to make great TV.

So in two episodes they put visual and pace like the new movies. A good fleet battle that reminds me of DS9. Tom Paris like story line from Voyager. And crew resourcefulness sprinkled throughout like all the old series. Amazing start can't wait until next week.

Well then, fears of suckage allayed! Some of the dialog and interaction among the crew was clumsy but they were trying to do a whole lot to start things off with a bang.

I just found out this will be streaming on Crave the day after airing on space. This is good news since I get crave for free with my hbo package but don't subscribe to space.
I rarely watch anything live so having to wait 24 hours isn't a big deal and saves me the effort of skipping commercials myself.

Ok first of all. Space, you bunch of idiotic potato heads. I set up to record you at 6:30 and 7:30 for the first two episodes, and of course you jacka$$es decide to run a 20 minute pregame show so of course when I watch the show, I get cut off with about 20 minutes to go in the second episode. Nice going you bunch of jack wagons.
Ok my thoughts, I'm not sure what to think, my first initial thoughts were that it was ok. not stunningly great. They had some good moments of tension, some nice cinematography, but I didn't come away breathless about the episode.
Spoiler!
First of all I had to wonder if this was another reality. The Admiral talked about not encountering the Kligons for a 100 years. But we know that in the show Enterprise that they had heavy contact with the Klingons. However Enterprise took place about 100 years before TOS and this show takes place 10 years before.
Apparently the Klingon Empire is fractured, but T'Kuvma is some kind of profit in re-uniting the great houses of the Empire. So to do that he flies around the galaxy in an intergalactic hearse and making a lot of speeches and then atacking the Federation. I will say that I'm still not on board with this version of the Klingons. They lack the fun and bastardry of the Klingons of TOS, TNG and DS9. They're dour and humorless and consumed with the idea of way.
I just can't get into Michelle Yeoh as Captain Gerogiou, she just seemed stiff and her banter with the crew seemed to be so stiff and uncomfortable.
Martin-Greene was ok as Michael the first officer who was raised Vulcan, and they tried to make her have some emotional supression. But her plan for firing on the Klingons after rendering the Captain unconcious was just stupid, why wouldn't she take the time to I don't know? Tie her up. Lock her in a broom closet? But instead she knocks her out with a Vulcan Nerve Pinch and goes tot the bridge and says "No worries fellas I'm just getting stuff ready for the Captain in case she has to fire, oh and Fire"
I was happy to see Doug Jones who played one of the creepiest monsters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer as one of the gentlemen. I loved the backstory of his species as a herd animal, which explains his flee instinct. I think he was probably the best character in this first episode.
The battle scene was decent, however it was too much like what they did in Battlestar Galactica with the shaky cam work, because of that it did create an atmosphere of confusion. However I only got to the point where the Klingons were collecting more armor errr bodies for their ship before Stupid Space cut me off.
Was it great? I don't know if it was, again there were lots of clumsy episodes of each Star Trek series, however it also wasn't as bad as the rumors had made it out to be.
I think the acting will straighten out as the actors get to know their characters.
The ship design was pretty good, however they fell into the trap where the ships looked far more advanced then the Kirk Enterprise, but that's a tough challenge that was handled really well in the DS9 Trials and Tribulation episode.
Not bad, not stunningly great, a few nice moments of tension and we'll have to see where it goes from here.

I assume the delay was to keep it in sync with the CBS broadcast, which was delayed by a football overrun. They probably weren't allowed to start airing it early.
Thankfully, that won't be an issue going forward.
The re-broadcast is currently airing as scheduled on Space, so you could record the second episode there.

Turn up the good, turn down the suck!
Recorded both episodes, now have to wait for the last 20 minutes. Maddening.
It's because of the football game going to overtime on the American channel. They were likely under contract to not start rolling before it played on CBS, so when it was delayed there they had to delay as well.
Shouldn't be any problems with the rest of it, as the rest is streaming only in the US.
Captain I only have have 3 words for you on judging the series too much on these first 2hrs, FAR POINT STATION
Oh I don't think I'm judging the whole series too early, I'm judging the episode alone, I plan to keep watching and give it a fair shake.
I did finally finish watching the episode late last night. I guess Spoiler tags are needed
Spoiler!
They went for the feels right away killing off the Captain, which fooled a lot of people because Michelle Yeoh was listed for 15 episodes and she was a huge part of the the publicity tour. But this is a show about Michael and not her. However it didn't have a big impact to me, her character and death was a device to send her first officer on her journey. She just didn't come across as a sympathetic enough character to elicit a strong emotional reaction to her death.
I also think its funny that the Federation beamed over a bomb and tried to kidnap a Klingon citizen who was recovering bodies after the battle was over. In the Klingon thought process she did the very thing that she didn't want to do. She acted without honor and created a Klingon Martyr.
I expect that now that there is a state of war between the Klingons and the Federation I would expect that when we see the Discovery that it will be a ship of war and her Captain a ruthless warrior and not a diplomat or explorer.
I wasn't a huge fan of Michael's court room speech, it went against the moment of passion that she had earlier when she mutineed. I would have expected some defiance from her and some conviction, instead we got this sad sad song, it didn't really endear her to me as a character.
I think that they have to re think the Klingon makeup somehow. It was just too heavy monster of the week and we had trouble seeing these Klingon emotions the makeup was too heavy and it really took you out of the state of belief when you looked at them because they looked like dudes in masks. The Holographs of the High Council just looked plain bad, they looked like sock puppets on a projector to me. The strength of the other series and especially Deep Space 9 Klingons was that the makeup left the face free while still maintaining and alien look. But you could see the emotions on their face.
The Science Officers make up was very good because while it covered his face it was flexible enough for him to be able to act through it.
Going back to the shooting of the battle, I just wasn't crazy about it and its something that they can certainly make better I also really didn't like the ship designs for the Klingon's they looked like freighters. The one thing that was always nice in Star Trek was that the Klingons were highly distinct in their ship designs they looked vicious and predatory and even a small ship like a Bird of Prey looked lethal. I do admit that I did like the Federation ship design though.
I tend to think that they wanted the bleakness of DS9 right off the back without the buildup to it that DS9 went through in the first couple of seasons. They tried to do that buildup in the first half hour with the desert planet scene.
Like I said, I don't think it was as bad as a lot of people were worried about. I'm well aware that series like this tend to struggle a bit at the start as the actors find their characters.
Here's hoping that we don't get an episode where this is all taking place on DS9's holo deck while the O'Brien tries to solve a ethical dilemma while observing a historical recording of some Discovery mission.

Man to this day I have this instinctive flinch when someone says Far Point Station
lol same, I rewatched TNG this last summer and the first season is really quite awful as a whole. Its amazing how far that show came along and became one of the best series in sci fi for me.
