Default Hard Drive Problem

I bought a new 2 TB drive to add to my NAS. I put the drive in the NAS, and nothing happened.

I took the drive out, put it in an external hard drive enclosure, and plugged it into my main computer via USB. The computer is running Windows 7. The device connects (I get the sound that it connected, and it shows up in the Device Manager as an external USB device.), but I can not access it through explorer or through the control panel where you would format it. I can tell it is definitely spinning.

In device manager, it says "this device is working properly".

Anyone know what's wrong?

EDIT: Now I have it showing up in Disk Management, but it says it is "unknown" and when I right click there is an option to initialize it, but when I try to do that I get the error "Incorrect function".

Further EDIT: See this thread... maybe I have a bad disk drive? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...-c7f27cd55e5b/

Of the top of my head, I am thinking it is something buggered with the hard drive controller or the enclosure, most likely the driver needed for the drive you are using or firmware for the external enclosure. As I understand it, the "Incorrect Function" message implies that the disk is not understanding what the OS is telling it to do.

That really is a random guess, but I think it is a bit more likely than bad hard drive. If you want some more confirmation, check your event logs and google the event ID and the source of the errors that come up when you try and initialize the disk.

I have a disk doing this too, and couldn't find anything solid.

The new goggles also do nothing.

Could be a bad drive, most manufacturers have a drive test tool you can download that'll read the SMART diagnostics.

You should be able to format the drive in Disk Management, but with the USB in the mix maybe something's different. Maybe try attaching the drive directly via SATA.

Some NAS devices also don't recognize all drives.

my gut reaction on HDDs that don't work out of the box is to return them (subject to photon's note about not all NAS devices accepting certain manufacturers or types of hard drives).

it's hard to see the upside of a HDD that doesn't work out of the box.

Mine is in my tower: direct SATA connection to mobo. It's also not new.

i would back it up immediately then and prepare for the day when it no longer works.

i have learned not to dick around with a hdd that doesn't appear to work; unfortunately the hard way. YMMV of course.

i can't wait until we can buy Tb upon Tb of disk and all of it is solid state.

Thanks, but when you're getting the "incorrect function" error the disk doesn't even appear as a drive in "My Computer" - it's already not working. Fortunately, there's nothing on the drive that I need to recover.

Could this issue be related to the new drive having 4K clusters? Whats the model number on the new drive?

Mine used to be a working drive... so I don't think that's it for me. Perhaps for Delgar though?

I'm not sure on the cluster size. I also have no idea why that might not work with Windows. Do tell.

Its a Western Digital 2 TB. Model Number: WD2001Fass-00W2B0
