Default Memory Tip for Chrome Users

Trying this to see how it goes. Before I restarted Chrome tonight, it was using more than 3GB of RAM!

I noticed that after I started using chrome, my RAM usage was going up. I think this might be a different problem though. I have 8 GIG of RAM. I just reformatted my computer a few days ago. When I go to my resource manager, it says I have

902MB in use
129MB modified
905MB standby
1391MB Free

4865MB Hardware Reserved

Is my system able to use all of the 8 GIGs if it had to? My computer seems a lot slower than normal.

I don't see a purge button in my Chrome task manager.

are you using a 32-bit version of windows, or 64-bit?

You know what. I was on 64-Bit before and I noticed I installed 32-Bit this time. I think that's it?

Works on mine (v.7.0.517.44).

Did you update the shortcut that starts Chrome (in the article)? The other thing is that you need to close all Chrome windows and then start a new one before it'll take effect.

Thai is it. 32 bit Windows operating systems have a maximum of 4 GBs RAM.

Is this required because Chrome has memory leaks?

I don't think it has memory leaks, just no reasonable limits on how much memory it will allocate to a tab. If you keep using a tab forever it'll just keep increasing the memory (so you can hit the back button forever).

I had one tab using 1GB of RAM all by itself!

You can put about:memory in the address bar and it'll show you the memory usage.

Oddly enough I have never had an issue with chrome and memory usage. When I use firefox it gets to around the 1.5gig mark, chrome for me has never even come close to a gig.

I normally have about 10-15 tabs open at once and leave my laptop open for 6-8 hours at a time.

I am going to keep a closer eye on it.

I had to reformat my PC and it's working great now. Thanks for the tip.
