The scouting on this years draft is going to be very hard. And the last list I saw had 4 D in the top 5 (and the forward was 4th or so). I haven’t heard of any prospect described in terms of a Matthews or Dahlin or even a Lafreniere.

Huge blockbuster

To Preds:
Monahan, Gaudreau, Giordano, Bennett = $22.425M

To Flames:
Johansen, Forsberg, Ekholm, Granlund = $21.5M

Both teams are in a tail spin and could use a huge shakeup. Flames move on from their core and dump Bennett in the process. All the contract terms matchup except Johansen has 2 more years term than Monahan.

Tkachuk-Lindholm-Forsberg
Dube-Johansen-Mangiapane
Lucic-Backlund-Granlund

Ekholm-Andersson
Hanifin-Tanev

Gaudreau edges Forsberg, but it’s fairly close and you could argue Forsberg’s game is more where the NHL is going. Johansen has zero goals and 5 assists. And just went on the COVID list so he’s not getting better soon. And he’s not good defensively. Edholm is better than Gio at this point but not really great. And Granlund would be a replacement whipping boy for Bennett.

ETA: Johansen’s contract is ugly.

I would love to acquire Forsberg from the Preds.

Forget the fake Swedish-name-guy Johansen and get Arvidsson and/or Jarnkrok.

Hire Grönborg as coach. Forget the Russian Five. We can do the Swedish Six...twice.

Forsberg-Lindholm-Arvidsson
Tkachuk-Dubé-Mangiapane
Granlund-Backlund-Jarnkrok
Lucic-Nordstrom-Kylington

A yankee, 3 hosers, and 8 Swedes.

I feel like we could keep Gaudreau and not acquire Johansen. Trade Gio and use that return + a little more to grab Ekholm.

If you add Ekholm for Gio you have 3 Swedes on D, plus a yank, a Finn and two Canucks. And Markstrom and Rittich.

I heard a rumor that the league was looking at possibly having this year’s draft next year. I imagine it would be the 2021 Draft one weekend, and the 2022 Draft the next, or something like that. It would give teams a better read on the prospects.

Interesting. That kind of makes sense. I assume the draft order for 2021 would be fixed after the season.

A good number of them are also American university players. If they aren't ready to make the jump soon (not uncommon for university players), there is always the risk that they will choose free-agency. You almost have to through money at them when they are 18 or 19 to avoid the risk.

I think I'd do that?

At the very least it's same crap, different names but with a fresh start is very possible that the fragile mentality could be eradicated.

I wouldn’t touch that.

Johansen is worse than Monahan while making almost $2M more per season, signed for 2 extra years, and is also older.

Gaudreau is a bit better than Forsberg.

...and the other rubbish, well...don’t really care about that stuff.

If Johnny ends up getting traded in a “hockey trade” that isn’t built around prospects/futures, this team is doomed.

Team could easily be doomed going this route. Picks and prospects might not pan out and then it is a straight exodus of our other players and this team could slip into a decade of darkness.

I look how Ottawa tore their team down and are trying to rebuild. It is such an ugly process and despite the fact they are a hard working team I don’t see this group becoming contenders any time soon.

Not sure how getting a late 1st and a couple of prospects from the Flyers in the offseason is setting this team up for anything other than a painful tear down followed by 4-5 years of rebuilding.

Roll with this. I would do Monahan for Forsberg if Nashville would accept that.

Forsberg is a LW isn't he?

Yes, but I feel like I would’ve received flack for putting Gaudreau on RW. I think both players would be fine being versatile. In fact, I sometimes feel like Johnny would be better on the RW. He has an underrated shot

That leaves you with 2 old centres and another who wants out.

The Nashville deal won't work simply because the Preds are not trading for a year and a half of Gaudreau while they toil in mediocrity. Gaudreau is not going sign with a team that neuters offensive players while toiling in mediocrity after leaving a team that neuters offensive players while toiling in mediocrity when he can go wherever he wants as a UFA.

I’ve said it before, as have others, but this team was designed with major decisions to make regarding our core players at the end of this season Quite frankly, it’s time to eat cap space in an odd time and trade for futures. I’m not sure if Markstrom will stick around for it, but a full rebuild or major 2 year minimum retool are what’s required to really fill the holes in this team. Unfortunately our mental makeup and mix doesn’t seem to be working. Barring a major winning streak coming up here against division contenders, our season is on its way to forcing ownerships hand.
