Default Vancouver vs LA in China

Anyone watching this right now?

The arena is maybe half-full. Poorly planned by the looks of it.

I thought they would pull back the penalty calls too but nope, Canucks have had 11 powerplays

By all counts the NHL is very serious about he crackdown. It will be a rough couple of weeks while players adjust, and I expect a similar sort of start as to the 2005 season which produced an increase in scoring.

Did the crowd at least seem to enjoy themselves? Curious how it was received.

Ya hopefully the players will adjust and also hopefully the refs make the calls consistently.

Chinese will only watch hockey if there's a Chinese guy in it. Like how Yao Ming popularized basketball. So the NHL thinking it can capitalize on the two week Beijing Olympics is a pipedream.

look at these snooker numbers. They have been climbing consistently for 15 years.

It was probably a good portion North Americans and Europeans living in/around Shanghai that went to the game.

How would the NHL capitalize on the Summer Olympics?

Anyway, Shanghai does have a pretty big ex-pat community, but if it can't fill an arena there, that's probably not a good sign for the rest of China.

That's what happens when no one else bids.

They should have given it to Astana.

oh I get it and I do agree with getting rid of the hacks

but for a 'showcase' game I thought they might just tell the refs and both teams to basically just go out and play shinny

That would have been a disservice to the Canucks and Kings seeing both teams brought close to starting rosters. Don't want those players starting the season thinking that they can get away with the same stuff as last season. It's going to take a while for players to adjust so the sooner they are subjected to the way officials are going to call the games, the better.

Why would they have to tell them, isn't that what the preseason is anyway?

No one wants or able to afford to host Olympic anymore, most host city ended up losing money.

Friend and I discussed going to see this game, but who really wants to see the Canucks play? Figure tickets could have been easily had very cheap, but still, it's the Canucks.

The second of the NHL China Games was played very early this AM in Beijing. LA prevailed over Vancouver 4-3 in a SO. I am just now watching the replay on SNP, and unlike the mid-week evening game in Shanghai this game appears to be a sellout with a much more enthusiastic crowd.
