I can buy into that. They need a fresh start anyhow.

Not really. Detroit is closer to Chicago, Minnesota, and Winnipeg. Columbus is closer to St. Louis, Nashville, and Dallas. They're basically the same distance from Denver.

Columbus 82.9988° W
Detroit 83.0458° W

So Detroit is ever so slightly further west, especially since it has a hard barrier to the east...but they are basically right in line with each other

Atlanta is actually slightly further west than both of them. Obviously meaningless since they don't have an NHL team, but if they did, it would seem crazy to put them in the Western Conference based on that.

Time zones are the most importance consideration, then probably natural rivalries. To me, Detroit does seem more like a "mid-west" city, and similar to places like Chicago, St. Louis, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, but that damn eastern time zone.

Maybe the NHL could soften the blow a little if Detroit was in the WC by making some of their inter-conference road games start an hour earlier so that their fans in Detroit don't have to stay up later to watch them, and they can get the primetime time slot.
