Yeah, at this contract he is still movable in the first few years at least. I wouldn't have hated him re-signing with the Flames. Not overly torn up on it though

That's not a bad signing for VGK until they see the real soft Hanifin that we saw as a Flames. I think I like Miromanov already!

To bad they can't do the additional conditions that allow for extra picks if player re-signs.

Miromanov is good at flashy offensive plays, but as an all-round defenceman he's not fit to tie Hanifin's skates.

That Nurse contract keeps looking more worser.

The only thing about that Walsh post is that he's not wrong - but it also means the player has to defer money to retirement.

Players like having the money now, and they can have more money right now if they play in the areas that are taxed less.

Similar to why players dont' like escrow.

Vegas better hope he doesn't put a dud in the playoffs like he did against the Oilers.

The entire team was a dud against the Oilers. It's foolish to single Hanifin out for that.

I dare you to go back and watch it! Hanifin, Rasmus and Markstrom put on ALL time NHL worst playoff performances in those 5 games.

Hanifin had one good play when he knocked a puck out of the air on the PP and we scored. Rasmus had one good play in the 180 foot goal he scored from our own end.

Markstrom had effing zip all in those 5 games.

I don't really agree with the first part of your post - I think a player like Hanifin, as vanilla as he may be, is probably worth about this on the market. It's not a bad contract.

Having said that, the bold part is still 100% accurate. The Flames keeping him would have just been the wrong move. They would have gone nowhere had they extended Hanifin (and the others). The Flames needed to start rebuilding, and thankfully they made that choice.

*don't mess it up in free agency, Connie*

The whole team was bad.

By the way, ‘ALL time NHL worst’ is a ridiculous exaggeration. I've seen scores of players in NHL games who wouldn't even be drafted nowadays. Hell, I've seen Nick Fotiu skating and Doug Dadswell in goal. You don't know what ‘all-time worst’ is even like.

And it is being challenged in Russ Martin, Donaldson, and Bautista instances (maybe they weren't counting days in/out of Canada though correctly...not sure).

Plus it's a deferment and on the level of income, it's still going to be a high tax rate (especially if they retire in a higher tax jurisdiction).

That Walsh clip comes up every time taxes are discussed but the fact is that players care about the tax rates in different places. Maybe they are being too simplistic and not trying for long term tax savings that even it out, but it's just a fact of like in the NHL that taxes matter.

Why does it seem like Vegas always has neverending cap space.

...because they don't hand out inflated free agent contracts to low/mid-tier players on contracts that take them into declining years, and they manage their team proactively enough that they're willing to make tough decisions (Reilly Smith).

They also manage the rules within the salary cap better than most other teams.

Seems about the current rate.

I think the taxes thing is minor compared to no winter, great facilities, competitive team with a chance to win.
