Beauty!

I got my 5900x yesterday, and had a mild heart attack when it wouldn't POST on first attempt(s).

Had to pull a stick of RAM and boot on 1 stick, update the BIOS, and everything was fine

Seeing massive synthetic gains, but for real world stuff (Ableton, Premiere, etc.) gains are anywhere from 2x-3x faster. Ableton in particular, my most bloated projects (~80% CPU utilization) dropped by more than half (down to ~38%). Sincerely impressed and I haven't even tried an OC yet.

Stock 5900x/3080 vs OCd 6700k/2080

(Also, can I say how absolutely wild it was to have CPU pins to deal with in TYOOL 2021? I haven't built AMD in forever and was absolutely shocked they still use pins)

You say that, but my 1060 is still running games well! I see no reason to upgrade yet.

I agree. I have no compelling reason to move on from my 2060.

Oh my god, Gen 2 RTX/DLSS is excellent

Just installed the COD:BLOPS:CW (lol) freebie that came with the card. Everything on full, 1440, full RTX, DLSS on Quality, constant 100-120 FPS. Just absolutely incredible.

Have to say I'm happy I held out on a gaming laptop.

The price/performance on the 3060 and 3070 laptops is so far above what is available in-market today.

The 3060 laptops are supposedly 2080 laptop performance but starting at $1000 USD instead of what would likely cost you $2000 USD today for a 2080 laptop.

Yeah the only reason to move on would be VR performance, which is why I did. Otherwise, you're probably fine for another year or two

The current state of the processor market is frustrating. Any advice on what I should do?
I have a i5-3570k and either it or the mobo are on it's last legs, I mean... it's been 6-7 years? It desperately needs an update as it can't handle some editing software, streaming and other games.

I'd jump on the Ryzen 5000 series in a heartbeat, either a 5600x or 5800x as the price point and value for performance seems unbeatable. But.... there's the stock problem. I don't know how much longer I'd have to wait, and if I can wait that long.

What would you do in this case? As you can see, having a massive amount of cores hasn't really been a concern of mine as the 3570k single core has been enough till now. So something like a 3900x is probably overkill. Would you just go for a mid-line Intel which when compared to AMD then becomes a bit more close to value when on sale? Something like a i7-10700k? Or maybe go with AMD 3000 series and mobo to suit a future upgrade to a 5000 when it's back in stock. I actually use my current setup with a 2060 playing on VR, flightsim, etc, so the fact it's gotten me this far is surprising.

FYI, would have to buy mobo obviously, along with RAM and power supply. If AIO recommended, existing case will handle only a 240mm.

5600x and 5800x are actually in stock quite frequently. Newegg and CanadaComputers seem to get them in a lot.

If you're mainly gaming though, any of the Intel chips are perfectly fine.

I've been following Newegg, but their stock seems to be 3rd party at higher than MSRP. Maybe I keep missing out on incoming though, I don't have any sort of alarm, I just check morning and evenings. I'm on the wait list at Memoryexpress, but they said it could be March.

edit: Now I see there's an auto-notify option for stock.... I swear that wasn't there before!

I mean depending on how much time you want to invest, you can just leave

https://www.twitch.tv/war10ck3d

open in a browser in the background with your audio on, and it will announce when stock comes in somewhere.

I haven't heard about my RMA for my CPU, I might try and buy another one with that channel, I can always just sell the RMAed one I guess.

Its a bit presumptuous to assume you will be able to get your hands on one of those laptops with a 3060 for 1k usd in the next 6 months. Confirm a preorder if you can as there is little risk but given current sales of gaming laptops in the 1-2k range for the previous 6 months my guess is there will be exactly 5 available when they are released and bestbuy or memoryexpress or lenovo will then have a similar model with a 1660Ti or 2060 GPU on "SALE" for a comparative price as consolation.

If you find anything good with a confirmed shipping date though definitely snap it up!

SuperMatt this may be of interest:

https://www.newegg.ca/core-black-msi...Ij9nEy.wEhYULQ

Feb 2 release date so not too long of a wait. Unfortunately prices in Canada always seem a bit higher than US but its under 2k CAD so not too bad.

This is the slippery slope I found with laptops. Why not spend a tiny bit more and get this with a 3080 for only 2.5k:

FYI Nvidia is going back to the old way where a 3080 in a laptop is nowhere close to the PC version. From what I heard a good 3080 might get you 1080ti experience and that is if you are lucky to pick a "performance" 3080 there will be a "quiet" 3080 variant that will be even worse. Just look at the re-design Nvidia did on the reference 3080 cooling, no way that toaster oven is going to work in a laptop.

Not entirely sure where this is "going back".

Here's NotebookCheck's current GPU tier list (desktop & mobile):

Here's the list resorted by Time Spy (DX12 Synthetic) scores:

(they haven't ran TimeSpy on a 3080 MAX-Q yet)

According to the numbers you linked:

3080 desktop vs 3080 mobile--- 17535.5/12100= 45% difference (MaxQ will be larger)
2080 Super desktop vs 2080 super mobile--- 11450/10313= 11% difference

"Going back" was referring to Nvidia marketing that the mobile solutions were almost as good as the PC variant until now. In essence consumers will be burned buying a 3080 laptop ending up with MaxQ 3080 that is substantially slower than a desktop 3080.

A recent WAN show goes through it starting at 18:20. They claim MaxQ 74% slower and go on about how Nvidia has marketed themselves into a corner surrounded by even more pissed off customers.

I mean when you design a card with a 430 Watt power draw, yeah I wouldn't expect to have similar performance on a laptop.

Who would?

Managed to get a 3070 pretty easy at MSRP. Only 20 days wait time.
