As ever, since the Oscars and I can never agree on what a 'Best Movie' is, I had a read of the synopsis of Nomadland.

It sounds boring AF to me, and I thought "Not a bad concept, of sorts, but they'd need to 'Mad Max' it up to keep my attention."

I'll echo what everyone is saying and assume they thought Boseman was going to win best actor so they put it last and were wrong. A very strange ending between a rushed in memoriam, best picture not being last, McDormand with a somewhat surprising win and Hopkins not even being there to get his also surprising win (with a couldn't care less Joaquin Phoenix handing it out).

Outside of that I thought it was a pretty good show. The setting and overall presentation was a nice change. Even the trivia thing worked but should have been done a lot earlier.

I’m thrilled Druk won for best international film. I really liked that movie.

I also watched Soul and thought it was a nice little film.

I mentioned this in the Random Thoughts thread. You can't have an awards show with no clips of the nominees. I don't know what the winners did. It's like having the Grammy's with no music.

I had only seen 2 of the best picture noms, so I didn't have much interest in watching this year's ceremony.

Cool to see McDormand win for Nomadland though. Great movie and an outstanding performance IMO.

Didn't watch the Oscars because I hadn't really seen many of the movies this year, so I watched one of the nominees- Judas and the Black Messiah. Takes place in the same time period as the Trial of the Chicago 7 and is also a true story and takes place in Chicago. It wasn't as easy a watch (Sorkin is such a good writer) but a great movie for sure- Both actors deserved their supporting actor nominations and wow, Chicago seemed like an awful place to live in the 60s, especially for minorities.

Nomadland was good but a bit boring. I'm not surprised it won as it had a lot of buzz but I wasn't wowed by it. I'm slowly working through the rest but I thought Chicago 7 was a better film overall.

I havent seen Nomadland yet, but I loved the Trial of the Chicago 7.

That makes sense. It wasn't in it's traditional February spot so people probably didn't know it was on. There were no Oscar parties to drum up interest. Not many people saw the movies so there was no rooting interest. And the show was so bad people probably turned it off after an hour.

I watched every movie up for a major award, have done do for the past few years.

Anthony Hopkins was incredible, good call. Mank for Cinematography, yes. Every other award was off the mark. Menari was fine, it was ok.

Having not watched the films involved this year, and just reading about the circus around the Oscars and other awards, I got the impression that this year was subject to a lot of politicking and marketing to voters. Probably hasn't been this level of pressure since Shakespeare in Love.

I don't know about politicking, but I imagine Nomadland won because, from what I understand, actors make up the biggest portion of best picture voters.

It was good, if not just fine. The acting was spot on. Every character felt completely genuine in every way and there are times in it where you could've told me it was a documentary with real people and I would have believed you. But it's just a bit boring. It's so much like the real life of someone in that situation, absent the drama that most lives are absent of, that there's very little to escape into or get caught up in. Things happen, other things happen, the character is at the end who they were in the beginning, much like most people, there is a middle frequency of emotion and it never really goes above or below it.

As far as the most depressing goes... I have definitely seen far, far more depressing movies. It is depressing, but more in the "constant cloud" sense, and less in the "punch in the gut" sense.

Anyway, worth watching because it is well done, but I also don't think you'd miss much if you skipped it.
