Sorry if this seems a little like spam but I didn't want to hide that I work there and it actually is a great deal for a complete ski tune.
Is that the shop in Montgomery?

That's a wicked deal. I'll be bringing a few pair

Does that include minor base repair/grind?

It includes base grind, ptex (filling in damage), sharpen, stone grind and wax. Snowboards are also included but just $25 instead of $20.

Freshtival starts tonight!

Unfortunately I didn't get McConkey tickets in time. So I'm going to have to try to scrounge some. If anyone knows of any...

I'm more pumped for this upcoming season then I have ever been before. I plan on hitting the slopes every weekend. Got brand new skis to try out. Got winter tires so no more fears of driving off the road on the way to/from the hill. Can't wait!!!

Big-ass annual Ski Sale at Max Bell next week, for those looking to gear up on the cheap.

Honestly at this stage the only thing I want is Dynafit binders. Either speeds or one of the radical sets. If anyone knows where to get them for cheap give me a heads up because the $567 they want at MEC makes me a sad panda.

^Go to d-structure.com, which is a shop in Quebec. They always have poles on sale and will mail them to your door. Should be able to get poles for $50 or so. If you have any other stuff you might want to pick up in the meantime you can get free shipping on orders over $100. Other places online sell poles but I don't know of a better option in-Canada (which avoids customs issues and us-only distribution agreements a lot of web vendors have).

Seriousy? Go to Sport Check and pick up a pair of $30 Rossi or K2 poles.

Any one hour comments on rossignol avengers carbon? There's a sports check closing in Edmonton and I can get these for $130 bucks. The say the msrp is $900-1000 if that counts for anything

Granted I've only skied twice and renting on the mountains is already $60 bucks.

But I'm a decent snowboarder (blue to black) if that matters.

This. I got my poles for about 25 bucks at Sport Chek. Cheap poles are better anyway because although they weigh a bit more, you can straighten them out if you bend them. The expensive ones can't be bent back...they just snap.

Nakiska is supposedly opening on Saturday. Given this...

Spoiler!

I'm not sure what they expect people to ski on. But whatever.

Incidentally, Louise is supposed to open on November 8, Castle on December 13, haven't heard anything else.

Where's a good place to get used skis? Is the Max Bell sale the best bet? Any alternatives?

There are always pairs on Kijiji. Value varies. I always find the ski swaps in actual ski towns to be better - Canmore or Banff. What kind of skis do you need?

The ski sales can be a very good way to get a nice pair of used skis but you need to know what you are looking for. Personally I would recommend researching skis and try to narrow down to 4-5 specific ski models you want to look for and know what ski length is best for you. At these sales there is very little help provided when it comes to selecting skis and those who are helping are just volunteers and may not know all that much relevant information. As long as you have a couple of specific skis you are looking for then you should be fine.

The other thing to look closely at is of course the condition of the skis. Other then the obvious core shot damage to the skis the best way to tell how much use the ski has had is the amount of edge that is left. If a ski has been tuned repeatedly the base may look good but if it has very little edge left then the ski may not last too much longer for you. Just compare a few of the skis until you can start to tell just how much edge is an average amount to have.
