Other than Dumb and Dumber he's never really been a "relevant" comedic actor though.
Exactly. Not in comedy.
The whole genre changed from slapstick and "dumb" humor to the Judd Apatow/Will Ferrall/Todd Phillips brand of comedy. Whether you like it or not is up to you but it's true. Look at the all of the latest comedy hits, only thing I can think of that falls out of that style is Grown ups.
I think slapstick still has a place. Even if it doesn't, this film will be a guaranteed financial success, even if the movie gets panned.
And who goes to see a sequel to Dumb and Dumber expecting Judd Apatow comedy? This is a complete throwback to the mid-90's slapstick. Heck, there was even a transition into the Apatow-style comedy. The Farrelly's There's Something About Mary was a good indication of that - it was around that time we started to see the formation of the Frat Pack into multiple film collaborations, which has regularly been cast alongside "Team Apatow" actors in comedies spanning the 2000's, of which some consider as extensions of the Frat Pack. Ben Stiller and Matt Dillon have been part of that transition.
It's really weird seeing Will McAvoy looking like that.

I have left work almost every day for the last decade and a half, reenacting this scene. I am happy about this movie, and I think it will be excellent.

When was the last time the Farrely's hit a home run with a movie? Been awhile and sequels rarely pan out. As much as I love nostalga and enjoyed the first one, it's kinda hard for me to get too excited for this.

I read the original transcript for Dumb & Dumber and the majority of the jokes were not funny and it seemed really awful, a large portion of it was changed by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to make it funny. I think it will come down to them still having their comedic ability.
Carrey especially seems to have been reluctant to do a follow-up for years. Must be something pretty substantial for him to sign on and proceed to shooting.
Like Anchorman 2 I know this just can't live up to the legendary status of the first one, but it will be fun to see the characters again.

How do you look at those two characters and not laugh? They will definitely save the movie.
Yeah I think a lot of the laughs are tied simply to their physical appearance and mannerisms so I have a hard time believing this will not be funny. I doubt it will live up to the lofty heights of the first one but really as long as they stick to the same formula it should be better than your average comedy these days. If they stray too far and try something a little different they could get into some trouble but I'm hoping all involved is smarter than that.
