Also, the 3D really felt/looked bad in this one, I thought. More so than 3D usually is. Everything felt pretty flat and 2D for a 3D movie. Anything that wasn't the immediate focus of the shot seemed to be extra blurry/twinned, too.

Don't feel I wasted the money, but won't be seeing it again, and won't be talking it up to friends.
That's because it's a converted 3D movie, not shot in 3D movie.

I really liked it. Probably because I went expecting a Godzilla movie and not Breaking Bad or The Wire.

Also, I thought Cranston was "ok". Definitely not a great performance from him, but more than adequate for the genre.

Well reactions appear divided, maybe even more negative than positive here. But I think we can do without these non-fans comparing it to films and tv shows of entirely different genres, or clearly didn't know what to expect in a monster film. Your money contribution is welcomed now, though, as it has helped to grant us fans a sequel, which will hopefully again be helmed by this director who is showing promise for the genre and has the style and look of Godzilla down right.

There will probably be a new cast too, I'd imagine. So those who weren't huge on ATJ or Cranston won't have to worry about that continuation. I imagine it'll be like the old 'zilla films where the human cast was just a rotating door. Keeps things fresh. Hoping next time for a new monster that is menacing and can physically rival Godzilla. That'd be sweet.

I hope the sequel has the tail slide double foot Dropkick.

From the Godzilla/MUTO point of view this movie was epic and badass.

From the human story point of view it was extremely cliche' and didn't break any new grounds.

Let's hope they the sequel will be better in that category.

I think Iggy City nailed it. The main character had little to no effect on the outcome of the story so based on that the human story sucked. The end fight nearly made it worth it but I went for Cranston and something new.

Just watched this movie. It was okay, but man was Taylor Johnson terrible in this movie. I'm not sure if it was his acting or just the writing, but I found the human aspects of the movie barely bearable. The scenes at the hospital, the lost Japanese kid, a lot of the army chat scenes felt pointless or drawn out. I feel like those human parts only work if you have stellar acting and/or stellar writing. Otherwise you just go full blown kaijin fights a la Pacific Rim. That's why I loved Pacific Rim. It stuck to its strengths. Outside of the Cranston scenes, the human scenes were not at all strong. The end battle was super awesome though.

I think this type of prevailing thought isn't going to do his movie career any favors as directors are going to start shying away from casting him knowing that Breaking Bad fans are going to be crapping on any movie that doesn't make him the focus. Cranston is not going to carry any movie so get used to him being more of a supporting character.

I don't follow your logic. The complaint is not that Cranston did not carry the movie, the complaint is that he was not given the opportunity to do so and was wasted. Once he died, the life drained out of this movie and it just became cities falling down and ATJ being annoying. I hate Breaking Bad and am definitely not a fan. That does not preclude me from thinking that Cranston is a fantastic actor and can carry a film himself.

Pacific Rim was way better because it embraced its cheesiness and somehow managed to get me involved with the characters

Thought it was interesting that they had Ken Watanabe's line about human arrogance and there they go with the film trying to stuff all these human actor scenes where it's unnecessary.

Hard to judge the kaiju fighting scenes between Pacific Rim and this. Enjoyed both in different ways. Pacific Rim because of the relatively unexpected deaths and Godzilla for the pure badassness of it all.

Did anyone else catch the Simpsons nod at the end?

With his final act to save the city he decided to 'nuke the whales'. I could hardly contain myself when I saw that.

The nuclear warhead was loaded onto a boat and he hit the auto pilot to take it to a preprogrammed point in the ocean. Then they panned out and showed that the boat was a whale watching boat. The most obvious point that a whale watching boat would have tagged into its navigation is the site where whales are most frequently found. (aside from port)

They were showing the 1998 Godzilla on TV. It's worse than I remembered.

Yeah I hadn't seen it in over a decade and I also saw it. Oddly enough my kids loved it but it was really bad all around.

I remember loving it when I saw it in theatres when I was nine years old.

I haven't seen it since and will prefer to keep it that way.
