I'm not saying the world is the same as it was prior to WWI, but I am saying that, in history, there has been a mistaken belief that tying economies closer together alleviates the threat of war. It's an interesting theory, but I don't think it holds true personally or historically. In the end, politics, nationalism, competitiveness, racism, etc. will 'trump' economics as a national motivator (in my opinion).

Just look at Russia... the actions they are taking are not, in my mind, economically motivated. They are motivated by some of the above.

Russia's aggression towards Ukraine is more about maintaining a buffer and a sphere of influence. It's a defensive measure to ensure that they don't have NATO or a strong US ally right on their border.

And they know they can take these actions because no Western power is going to take part in WWIII to prop up the mess that is the Ukranian government.

I believe they also view the need for that buffer because they know factions in both the US and UK desperately want regime change in Russia.

The old Russian Bear chicken/Egg argument.

‘Kiev would get away even with eating babies’: Putin says Kerch Strait standoff is a provocation

Quote:
If they demand babies for breakfast, they would probably be served babies. They’d say: ‘Why not, they are hungry, what is to be done about it?’ This is such a shortsighted policy and it cannot have a good outcome. It makes the Ukrainian leadership complacent, gives them no incentive to do normal political work in their country or pursue a normal economic policy.
God Putin is such a dick.

edit: Jesus Christ if you think Foxnews comments are bad, go read Russia Today. Holy #### Russians are racist lmao.
