2 bombings in 2 days. I didn't have a good feeling about these Olympics, and now this just adds more to the worry.

I think Socchi will be a lot harder to hit. Volgograd is a soft target. It would be like terrorists trying to disrupt an event in Toronto by attacking Thunder Bay.

The last thing I want to see is our Olympians staying home. It's exactly what the terrorists want. But in the interest of safety, you would hope someone from the Olympic team or association is looking closely at all of this.

I'm worried this will turn into Munich all over again.

There might be attacks/disruptions et al outside of Sochi but I highly doubt anything happens to an athlete or to an event. The Russians will have that place guarded like Fort Knox.

I don't think it's a question of "if", but how much can they control the bombings. They'll be groups from all over trying to make a statement at Sochi. Hopefully the damage will be minimum.

Groups from all over?
Even the "Gays Against Duck Dynasty Brigade"?

With the way they don't care about rights or due process etc. I would expect Russia, or at least Sochi, to be a fairly safe place from Terrorist attacks.

You have to think they will have that place locked up tight and any suspicious activity will be dealt with harshly whether justified or not.

My first thought was that Sochi is probably so secure that any would be bombers/terrorists are very aware that they can't succeed in doing anything to directly impact the olympics (with the exception of bombing a blockade/security perimeter). With that in mind, what's the next best thing? A few bombings shortly before to try to make it look like something will go wrong. Make people scared/pay attention. And it's working. Might even continue throughout since all attention will be on Sochi.

They've created a 100km security zone around Sochi, including the refusal to allow entry vehicles to vehicles from outside the zone into the zone for a period of the month before to the month after the Olympics.

It's going to be the most militarized Olympics ever.

Those people at the top of the steps for the blast must be just shredded by all that glass.

Volgograd is 1,000km away from Sochi. These bombings have absolutely nothing to do with the Olympics.

I agree with Moon on this. Russian's don't screw around with those who threaten them. They hit them hard & fast, with political considerations afterwards.

Cases in point;
Somali Pirates, Moscow Theatre,

Gets bloody for everyone;
Chechan Hospital & School

To be honest, I think the biggest concerns will be over minority political factions, peacefully demonstrating.

Except for the part where they leader of the group behind them said that the Olympics will be a target. Except for that part.

The Caucasus has been a volatile region for a very long time. Just because there are bombings happening in one Russian city two months before the Olympics does not mean they are related in any way to the Olympics.

The only part of the article that references anything concrete about the Olympics is the following:

Quote:
No one claimed responsibility for the Volgograd blasts, but they occurred several months after the leader of a Chechen separatist group pledged violence to disrupt the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics that begin on February 7.

Quote:
"Today we must show those who live in the Kremlin … that our kindness is not weakness," said Mr. Umarov, dressed in camouflage and wearing his trademark bushy beard. "They plan to hold the Olympics on the bones of our ancestors, on the bones of many, many dead Muslims buried on our land by the Black Sea. We as mujahadeen are required not to allow that, using any methods that Allah allows us."
http://www.csmonitor.com/World/2013/...orst-nightmare

They're related to the Olympics because they're coming up, and this group has stated they will be a target in an ongoing Terror campaign.

Hopefully the Russians give the same treatment to any terrorists they get a hold of, as they do to Somali pirates.
