Recycling?
Have a bunch of stuff that I'd rather not throw out but not sure where to take them. Top of my list is my old garburator. Also have a small toaster oven, microwave and a fair amount of copper tubing left over from kitchen renos.
Where does one take small appliances and scrap metal? Is the dump the only place?

The landfills will not charge for disposing of appliances big or small.
(wrong info..see post below)
Also, if the microwave is in good working condition you can donate it (wins, kidney care, goodwill, etc.)

If watching The Wire has taught me anything, you can sell the copper for decent money (or at least enough to buy some crack).

If you're in the south, you could probably take the appliances and things to the Value Village on 58th St. then take the copper to Na###o Metals, which is just east of there.

Put them on kijiji for free; people take stuff regardless of working or not.
*Note you will probably get 100 emails before someone actually comes to get it even after posting all the detailed specifics.

This is not true. I dropped of a deep freeze about 10 days ago and I knew I would have to pay the fee ($17.00) for the refrigerant drainage however I was also charged the minimum $20 dump fee. So total was $37 to drop it off for recycling.
You are better off dropping them off with a scrap metal place. They will take appliances for free (unless they need to be drained of refrigerant then it is $15).
From the COC site: 'Take cleaned out appliances to any of The City's landfill Throw 'n' Go facilities for recycling. Charges will apply' :

Agreed. I dropped of a bunch of stuff at Calgary Metal Recycling, no issues at all. City dump was going to charge $20 and the guy there told me about the recycling place.

I apologize for posting that.
I took a Microwave and a Freezer to Spyhill and was not charged and told that.
My bad.

If they've started charging for that, it must be relatively new because the Throw-n-Go place to drop-off old appliances/electronics used to be free.

They didn't even charge you for the freezer drainage?

Nope. (Back in April). They just directed me to a pile of Microwaves and another of Freezers, unloaded and left..didn't get charged at the gate or nothing. Lucky me I guess.
Again, I apologize for posting wrong info.

Sounds like maybe your info was correct back in April then or you got really lucky.
