2021 Tennis Thread
Happy New Year tennis nuts!! Who's ready for some tennis?
Milos and Vasek are in action next week in Delray Beach with Milos going in as the top seed. Bianca is in Dubai, but just for practice and training as it looks like her first action will not be until the Aussie Open in early February.
Here's hoping for a happy and healthy 2021 and bringing ATP and WTA titles back to Canada!

Yastremska, ranked 29 in the world, denied having used performance enhancing drugs and believes the positive test was the result of a “contamination event”.
“I’m astonished and under shock, particularly given that two weeks prior to this test... I tested negative at the WTA event in Linz. After this last tournament of the year, I stopped practicing to rest prior to the start of the new season,” she said in a statement.
“Only a very low concentration of mesterolone metabolite was detected in my urine. Given that low concentration and given my negative test two weeks earlier, I have received scientific advice that the result is consistent with some form of contamination event.”
The ITF did not say when Yastremska’s hearing would take place, putting her participation in the Feb. 8-21 Australian Open in doubt.

Contamination event... She should say she got it from sex, the Gasquet defense.

Tough one for Leylah as she loses 6-4 6-4 to Tamara Zidanšek of Slovenia. Zidansek upset Jennifer Brady in her opening round match thus it's clear she was playing some fine tennis.

not sure about authenticity of source, but Fed's withdrawal from AO may be covid/quarantine related rather as opposed to knee

"The main reason was the quarantine," said Sa. "I talked to him a month ago and he had two options. He could come with the whole family and do the quarantine.
"The problem is that Mirka and her children couldn't leave the room. They would have to stay 14 days in the room. The exception is only for players.
"He could go out, train and come back, but the family couldn't. Mirka did not approve the idea.
"The other option would be for him to come alone. Only there would be at least five weeks away from family and children. And then he said, 'Dude, 39, four kids, 20 grand slams. I'm no longer at the stage to be away from my family for five weeks.'"

Aussie Open qualifying has begun - Canadian men attempting to qualify include Brayden Schnur, Peter Polansky, and Steven Diez. As far as the women are concerned, Genie Bouchard and Rebecca Marino (yay, Rebecca is back) are attempting to qualify.
Steven has won his opening round qualifying match.

The only Canadian who has been eliminated from Aussie Open qualifying has been Brayden Schnur. Peter Polansky has joined Steven Diez in the second round for the men while Rebecca Marino joins Genie Bouchard on the women's side.

Australian Open qualifying results:
Steven Diez lost his match to Henri Laaksonen in three sets (6-3 4-6 2-6)
Genie Bouchard lost to Yue Yuen in straight sets (2-6 4-6)
Rebecca Marino advances to the final round of qualifying with a straight sets win over Victoriya Tomova 6-2, 7-6(7)
Peter Polansky plays his second qualifying match later today.
Edit: Polansky lost his qualifying match thus Rebecca Marino is the lone Canadian remaining in Aussie Open qualification.

Some pretty crazy results at Delray Beach as Christian Harrison (ranked 789 and he of the multiple surgeries) has advanced to the semi-finals. He eliminated the top seed Cristian Garin in straight sets earlier in the tourney, but faces a tough opponent in Hubert Hurkacz.
Also, young American Sebastian Korda (son of Petr Korda) is also into the semi-finals after eliminating John Isner.

So this is pretty cool - Rebecca Marino has qualified for the Aussie Open and will play down under for the first time since 2013.
