Whistler wants Alberta oil and gas company to pay for resort's climate change costs
https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...e-change-costs
The municipality of Whistler, B.C., is asking the oil and gas industry to pay its “fair share” by chipping in for budget costs related to climate change.
In a letter addressed to Calgary-based Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. dated Nov. 15, Whistler Mayor Jack Crompton said the town’s taxpayers “are paying 100 per cent of the costs” associated with climate change events such as “drought, flooding, and extreme weather.”
He’s asking CNRL to pay in to “the costs of climate change being experienced by Whistler,” including the municipalities’ “$1.4 million investment in community wildfire protection activities” for 2018.
“As a town with a population of less than 15,000 people, this is a significant cost to bear along with costs associated with impacts to winter and summer sports tourism,” he said in the letter.

The residents of Whistler cannot afford an extra $100?

Would love to see how Whistler intends to prove that Alberta is responsible for "climate change events such as “drought, flooding, and extreme weather.”

It's very sad that clowns are becoming ever more vocal and successful in our society. Don't people know how to critically think anymore?

Sounds like mayor Jack Crompton has been going over-board with that good BC sticky-icky since it's been legalized...

I hope Whistler is stupid enough to take CNRL to court over this and try to reclaim what they're "owed". Won't look very funny when a town has to repay legal fees to an Alberta O/G company over a massive dumpster fire of environmentalist schlock that they started.

In the US, California cities and New York actually tried to sue oil companies for climate change damages but their cases were dismissed.
People like the Whistler Mayor should read the judgements, especially the part below:
Quote:
“Our industrial revolution and the development of our modern world has literally been fueled by oil and coal,” Alsup wrote. “Without those fuels, virtually all of our monumental progress would have been impossible. All of us have benefitted. Having reaped the benefit of that historic progress, would it really be fair to now ignore our own responsibility in the use of fossil fuels and place the blame for global warming on those who supplied what we demanded? Is it really fair, in light of those benefits, to say the sale of fossil fuels was unreasonable? “Nuisance suits in various United States judicial districts regarding conduct worldwide are far less likely to solve the problem and, indeed, could interfere with reaching a worldwide consensus. The problem deserves a solution on a more vast scale than can be supplied by a district judge or jury in a public nuisance case.”

That is un-fataing believable. I was just there this freaking month. Flew to Vancouver, drove to the mountain, enjoyed their outdoor hot tubs. Listened to their snowmakers run all night while watching them use heavy equipment to finish installing their new Blackcomb gondola. I wish I hadn't given them a cent now and just went to Lake Louise instead.

I would like to think that Whistler residents would be embarrassed that they elected this guy but it is BC after all and there's probably a large population of nut jobs that actually believe in this.

i am assuming that the town of whistler has suspended all use of fossil fuels the same day they sent this to the O&G companies.
somewhere in BC there is a group of lobbyists cheering this move, while they cash a check from the folks at Tide so they can keep their protest going.
Somewhere in BC I hope a lawyer is making money from consulting to Whistler

Just remember that Canadians have helped out Tides through a donation of our tax dollars just last month.

Please please don’t turn this into another AB vs BC fight. I guarantee these nutters are a minority in BC and most people here would find this just as dumb as you all do.

No one tell Trudeau about this.
“On behalf of all Canadians I appologize sincerely and openly to the people of Whistler. Their many large and unoccupied vacation homes and hotels that are threatened daily, the loss of their many vehicles which are used to transport them from the airport. They only come to enjoy the man made skiing, and it is wrong for anyone to threaten that. In short, to think these people deserve this fate is wrong no matter what gender you are”
