2018 US Open
Anyone seeing what Shinnecock is doing to some of the best players in the world? Its remarkable.
Only 5 guys under par thus far and some really large scores. DJ playing really well and tied for the lead at -2 (13). Ian Poulter in at -1.
3 Canadian.... Mack Hughes +6, Adam Hadwin +9. referee Garret Rank shot a +13.
A pro from England named Scott Gregory shot a 92....22 over par.
Sergio +5, Tiger +6. Bubba and Phil +7, Spieth +8, Jason Day +9, Rory +10.
Its pure carnage and the greens are expected to get even quicker over the weekend as it dries out.

Tiger just went back to back doubles to go to +8...also has a triple on his card.

I said this in the PGA thread, but there's a difference between challenging and unfair. This course is definitely unfair right now. I fully expect FOX to beg the USGA for the easiest course set up in history tomorrow so some of the big guns actually make the cut. But if the course does dry out and the winds stay up, +5 might be the best case for the winning score. A winning score of +10 will definitely be in play.

I think the only reason one could argue that the course is unfair is because of the weather.
Cant blame the USGA for that.
If the wind dies down and they keep the greens watered, scores will come down. Besides, its the same for everyone.
The more i think about it, the more this reminds me of 04 when Goosen won his 2nd open.

I don’t mind the big scores, it’s a nice change of pace. Pretty disappointed some of the bigger names didn’t fare better today.

I mean we're watching some holes where guys hit two quality shots and are still making double bogeys. It's the greens and the pin positions that are mostly driving these scores. Fairways are so wide the long rough isn't even a factor. These weather conditions are not really that bad. Imagine if they were dealing with Open Championship winds and tighter fairways. We'd be seeing a few players in the 90s.

Just saw a clip of Spieth try a chip and the ball rolled all the way back down the hill.
The green design and hole location looked like a mini golf course. Hole at the edge of a 15 foot elevation drop.

They shaved the grass/rough around the greens. Why so many rolled off the greens and ended up 30 yards away. Previously they would leave the rough extra long starting 3 feet off the fringe. Think i would prefer the rough if the greens are going to be slick.
Heard it described as 'putting on ice' but it apparently didnt help that ref...

I liked it. Watched the whole day actually.
I prefer, for example, the shaved areas around the greens over just having a foot of rough to hack out of.
Can't just bomb it. Can't run it up. Can't sky shots in. Takes a lot of thought, and maybe a lot of luck. People will always watch the US Open, just because.
I don't expect the players care for it much.

Tiger on hole #1 this week: Two drives in the middle of the fairway, a double and a triple bogey to show for it. He's missing the cut off one hole pretty much

Well, there were two players that were under. Poulter just made a triple that brings him back to even so Johnson is the sole player that's under, at -4.

Dustin has been so rock solid so far it's tough to see anyone catching him. But as we just saw from Poulter and have seen from almost everyone who is +4 or worse, all it takes is one hole. But back-to-back under par rounds on this course is a pretty remarkable achievement.

Looks like Spieth will miss the cut, sitting at +9 after missing a putt on 18.

Made four straight birdies to get under the cut line (which is insane on this course), and then back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18 to miss the cut.

Yeah. That hack out of greenside rough on 18 looked just like me...

At this point it's looking like Fox will need to make it look like Johnsons ball moved on Sunday so they can talk about a potential one stroke penalty denying him a 10 shot win.

Seems to be the same formula on most greens- hit it a few yards short of the landing zone and it rolls 30 yds back, a few yards long and it kicks 30 yds ahead. To the the left or right and it is in an ungodly bunker. Pretty hard to advance it more than 100yds if you go in the fescue off the tee. A lot of 3 irons or hybrids on a couple of the par 3s, and many players are looking at 225+ for their seconds on a few of the par 4s. And likely the biggest challenge when you look at the numbers- incredibly fast and sloping greens. One of the toughest US open courses, which is awesome.

WTH?
Did he just hit a ball that was rolling away?
I just caught the very end of that.
Weird stuff.
