Future results are always more predictive looking at the process vs the outcomes
I'd rather have a GM who has a good process, vs one who gets lucky on some WAGs, but crushes the team with WAG mistakes

Yeah, and if he doesn't make those moves, think about the complaining that he didn't try to improve the team enough.

Also, just checked - the Canucks have $6.8M in cap space, and two RFAs (Boeser and Goldobin). They also have too many bodies on NHL deals.
|
Do you mean just 1 way deals or the contract limit?
I saw last week they were at only 45 contracts
Lots of people expect erikson to start the year in utica, gaudette might as well too since he has a 2 way deal on his elc

At the time of the deal, if Neal signed that to go to Vancouver or something I would have been pretty annoyed that the Flames weren't in on him.

Good for him. Makes no difference, the Canucks are still going to suck hard.

What if Ferland’s play falls off a cliff like Brouwer and Neal? Then it is a great move by Tre not to have signed him. Yet, if he produces it was a bad move by Tre.
If Neal returns to form this season, suddenly a bad move is now a good move and Tre is smart and a good GM again.

Winning the division gets erased by how hard the Flames got exposed in the playoffs. There are some very troubling holes on this team and I don’t expect them to finish that high next year, now that the book is out and other teams around them have gotten better. Treliving is unable to address those holes effectively in part because of his past mistakes.
If this ends up being another mediocre season and early summer for the Flames I think it’s fair to question the lack of activity and inability to close out moves, and perhaps call into question the direction this team has taken. Mediocrity should never be acceptable or above reproach.
|
He also doesn't deserve to continuously have his nose rubbed into it at every available opportunity.
As for the "very troubling holes" on the roster and the "book being out" on the Flames this year, I remain thoroughly unconvinced. Five playoff games is simply too small of a window from which to glean much useful information, and even then, I continue to maintain that the problems in the Colorado series were not intrinsic, and most likely correctable with time and experience.
The Flames should be a threat to win the Pacific Division this year like last year, and they are almost certain to be in one of the three Division playoff spots since the teams that matter most have actually NOT gotten any better. I don't see that as a step back at all.

I fully expect Ferland to be lights out for the first 2 months of the season, and then his game fall off a cliff/be hurt for the remainder of the season.
Glad we didn't bring him back

What I wouldn't give for the Flames to pull some voodoo and snatch up Boeser out of this.
Pipe dream, but still.

And consistency aside, he's still a solid 40 point winger that can play either side, and on top of that his AAV is right in line with his production.
I easily do this deal if I'm Calgary. Dissapointing

I wonder if Bennett's agent is rubbing his hands with this signing.
the division has Ferland, Miller, Roussel, Kassian, Lucic, Khaira, Reaves etc.

Miller? Are you suggesting he's supposed to be intimidating?
Edit: He's actually fought more than I would have guessed.

There is zero connection between the Ferland signing and any risk of losing Boesser.
It would be like a Canucks fan saying "Gee, Calgary is going to be over the cap, I'd sure like to be able to get Tkachuk out of this".
Calgary is currently in bigger cap trouble than Vancouver. And Calgary's will be solved easily enough.

Remember the playoffs? They kept mentioning she didn't want him hitting the Sedins.
