Things are lining up to be a nice show. Hopefully the numbers stay good and we get clear skies, maybe we can get a repeat of Thanksgiving when people were able to see it in the city.

on the iPhone the Aurora App is rather handy. Also has a great section on the Sun images taken at various frequencies. And finally, the gallery is phenomenal and shared around the world.

Exactly one year since this thread was bumped. Interesting how last year both Thanksgiving and around Halloween were strong nights for the aurora in Alberta, the same as this year. Although I think clouds ruined it last year.
This year, we also had a great show in Alberta on Thanksgiving, and as many have likely seen by now in media stories, there's a lot of excitement over the possibility of a *really* great one tonight and/or Sunday night.
The forecast is for a rare KP7 / G3 event. And the sky is predicted to be clear.

Looking at the cloud coverage, if I just hop in the car at head to Sault Ste. Marie they have a strip of clear sky……. Bah!

This is a pretty good thread. I think I’ll just head out if it’s not overcast and I start to hear rumblings about it. How far north along Deerfoot should one go? Balzac, Crossfield, Didsbury?

If this storm is as big as predicted, you don't need to go north at all. Heck, you shouldn't even need to leave the city. However, if you want a dark sky experience, you will generally get to darker skies faster going anywhere other than up the QE2.

For the photographically inclined, a strong storm, as this one is predicted to be, is an opportunity to get ambitious shots that would normally be impossible/difficult: urban shots, shots in the mountains with higher horizons, maybe even south-facing views.

There's a moderate storm in progress that may have already peaked but is not the big one forecast, and the satellite that provides the 30-60 minute warning if/when the big one shows up isn't sending data right now. So basically, it's still just a matter of waiting for the sky to turn green.
