I'm a little surprised.

My guess is that they are hoping he sneaks through. I am about 50/50 if someone takes him. At almost any other point, I think a team takes him. At this specific time, players like him have a better chance to pass through.

Honestly though, he is probably better than Edmonton's bottom 2 or 3 guys. They would be dumb to not take him.

Putting Derek Ryan on waivers is extremely stupid. I have no idea what they're doing.

Okay, the Ryan one surprised me.

I'm guessing that they see Bennett at center full time now and Ryan is taking his spot. I also am guessing that they see Ryan's salary as being prohibitive to someone claiming him.

Either way, definitely some notable names on waivers today.

I'm starting to wonder about his locker room presence. COMPLETLEY HYPOTHETICAL
Its just where my mind goes when the team seems unsure of a young player whose grown through the system and seems ready to break out

I'm confident he will be taken as well...
I think it is a mistake to keep Nesterov ahead of him IMO

Did the same gamble with Byron and it burned us

If he is claimed, he has to stay on the NHL roster. There is no time limit.

If the claiming team decides to waive him at some later date in the season and the Flames put in a claim, and were the only team to put in a claim, they could send him down (or to the taxi squad) as if he cleared waivers originally.

Ryan’s cap space would give some flexibility. I think that means Bennett is a lock for the number 4 center spot.

Edit - What Cali said.

Ryan with his cap hit is near certain to not be picked up by someone else.

If the Flames want to get Pelletier (or someone else) in for a 6 game tryout, the sflames probably had to do something like this.

I wonder if its some shuffling for a deal. Doesn't make any sense to put Ryan on Waivers.

Stupid by Treliving IMO

Feels a bit similar to Kulak in that the contract negotiations didn’t go as planned or the Flames didn’t like how Kylington handled it. And now they let him go for nothing.

I feel like we may look back on this one with regret.

Even if he’s not the best keep him as your #7. Mackey is waivers exempt and not like the other guys on PTOs have been amazing.

The Flames are extremely tight to the cap. A team claiming Ryan gives the Flames more freedom when it comes to trades. I don't think he gets claimed, not because he sucks, but it's hard for teams to add $3 million to their cap.

I am pretty shocked it happened but don’t think many teams have the cap space to pick him up.

Kylington is a bit of a surprise but more likely to be claimed in my opinion.

Sens could take him easily. And they need centers.

They moved Lindholm to centre his own line and I expect this means they want to play Bennett down the middle. Monahan, Lindholm, Backlund, Bennett. Ryan is a clear 5th in that group. You can’t be paying your 5th best centre over $3M/year. If someone takes him off your hands I say opening that cap space is a win.
