Connor Mackey in Group A. Oliver Kylington in Group B. I think that’s the headline. Kylington really hurt his prospects with the Flames this season and potentially forever by waiting so long to sign.

That would be something else if there was retribution for failing to sign and the Flames took an inferior player to make a point.

I'm not positive Mackey is inferior to Kylington. Maybe he's just looking better in camp?

Good point. I don’t see it as retribution. The Flames’ coaching staff got comfortable with Mackey whereas they did not get that chance with Kylington. Kylington didn’t give himself an opportunity to win the coaching staff over.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge Kylington fan, but he cost himself an opportunity.

I suspect that that the Flames management and coaching group do not look at Mackey as being “inferior” to Kylington.

Quite the contrary.

One should very safely ascertain that they want the best team possible.

Why would they cut off their nose to spite their face?

That is never going to happen under Treliving's watch.

Kyllington has had one on ice session. I don't think it means much other than he has to catch up with conditioning and pace of the camp. Kylington has played NHL games.

Oliver has had a couple of seasons now with a couple of different coaches to play his way onto the team.

To suggest that it is "retribution" that he isn't gifted a spot in the lineup doesn't make any sense to me.

It is all on Oliver to come in and prove he is ready for that spot. Much like Rasmus did a couple of years ago.

Just clearing things up. I did not say it was retribution. I said that Kylington cost himself an opportunity by not being in camp day 1.

I don’t think anyone thinks the Flames would exact revenge on a player for not signing quickly.

Here's an interesting look as #Flames fiddle with lines — Andrew Mangiapane with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau.

If his agent had him a) holding on the obvious contract and b) staying home until it was signed ... hence the late arrival and needing to quarantine then it was a big misstep.

If it was just a travel snafu then it's just bad luck and you go from there.

But yeah it's not retribution.

It's a team trying to get decisions made as soon as possible in a compact camp.

If I'm not mistaken, 8 D in group A, and 4 D with the B group. Will give Kylington more reps in that group, which is what Ward said he wanted.

I like a lot of these! If I was going for a big change up though:

Tkachuk-Monahan-Dube
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Mangiapane
Lucic-Bennett-Backlund
Pelletier/Simon-Ryan-Levio

Giordano-Andersson
Hanafin-Nesterov
Valimaki/Mackey- Tanev

One day I also want to see a pairing of Valimaki and Mackey just because it would be funny to say
