Shanahan has proposed a scorched Earth plan to MLSE and they approved it.

Quote:
Mr. Shanahan and his lieutenants have now finally received a broad mandate from ownership to scorch as much earth as they see fit in order to return the Leafs to contention, according to two sources familiar with that meeting. It will mean a new philosophy on building slowly through the draft and long-term projects, rather than quick fixes via trades for established players. It will mean at least three more years of pain for fans, and as many as five.

Shanahan uses the Leafs' ineptitude to garner support from MLSE execs to do a "scorched-earth" rebuild.

Author of article notes there will be no quick fixes, then goes on to propose a quick fix: "We'll just draft McDavid, hire Babcock and trade Phaneuf and Kessel".

And as many as five? If it could be much longer. Wasn't this the mandate they gave Burke? He got 5 years too but there was a lot of pressure after the first year

And that's why any talk from MLSE about a long-term rebuild via draft and development should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

The Toronto fans and media don't have the stomach for it. They may be on board for the first year, but after that the pressure to "accelerate" the rebuild will start to get ugly.

If the Leafs were ever in the position of this year's Flames ( young team where the rebuild isn't complete but they're having an unexpectedly good season ) the Leafs would be selling off picks and prospects to "make a run" right now instead of sticking to the plan.

What a bunch of idiots. You've got Phaneuf and Kessel locked up long-term to big dollars in the prime of their careers, pulling the chute now is just a huge waste of everyone's time and money.

No. The mandate was to win now

Nope. They expected a rebuild. Burke was impatiernt and decided at some point he could fast track it with thinks like the Kessell trade.

It says nothing about ownership wanting a full rebuild. The day Burke was hired he said management wanted to win now.

The Kessel trade was his first full season in Toronto

I think the Leafs could do a pretty quick rebuild. If they keep pieces like JVR, Kadri, Bernier, Reilly, Gardiner, Nylander and get into the top 5 this coming draft those are nice building blocks. Also if they can get some nice young assets for Kessel and serviceable players for Dion they could compete next year for a playoff spot.

It certainly mentions that Burke was rebuilding...

Remember when David Clarkson was a free agent? A lot of people thinks the Flames should sign him. I am glad they didn't and the Leafs ended up overpaying him. The guy been a healthy scratch for the last few games and just not getting it that in order to be in the lineup, he has to start working hard.

No wonder Toronto is no good.

They're not going to get any immediate help, and from what I've heard they don't want it. They want to suck and get top draft picks.

It's the smart thing to do. They have 2 players that teams would want but probably don't like the $'s awarded to those players. If doing a real scorched rebuild they can take back crap players with 2-3 years left at term but overpaid. They are going to need players to play while sitting in the bottom of the league for a couple of years. Might as well be the crap players that other teams don't want so they can get better value for Kessel and Dion. If they were trying to compete next year there is no chance they could have gotten good value for those 2 players.
