Default Pornography to be blocked by Default in the UK

Quote:
Most households in the UK will have pornography blocked by their internet provider unless they choose to receive it, David Cameron has announced.

In addition, the prime minister said possessing online pornography depicting rape would become illegal in England and Wales - in line with Scotland.

Mr Cameron warned in a speech that access to online pornography was "corroding childhood".

The new measures will apply to both existing and new customers.

Hm, wonder what the members of CP living in UK would think of this...

Maybe CP is next!

This seems... odd.

If parents are concerned, there are many options available for blocking said content.

The government legislating on this topic is a step backward IMHO.

Depending on your platform.

I tried blocking access to porn on a ipod for a young man I know, and it was virtually impossible without eliminating all access to the internet, which I can only control at his home.

Even then, there were a few ways around it.

They say nothing about the technical aspects of how they plan on doing this, which is the worrisome part to me.

In other news, sales of brown bags, trenchcoats, and wide-brim hats go up.

It doesn't seem that odd. It would be exactly like TV works currently.

By default you won't be able to access adult sites, like you can't access adult channels. You can request the service though through your provider. Difference being that you won't have to pay to surf for porn.

Doubt that will last long. Some ISP will jump on that revenue stream ASAP.

"Oh yes sir, we will turn that on for you right away. We just need to charge a £49.95 administration fee."

The whole awkward you phone up the internet company, get a chick with a incredibly sexy voice and go through the weirdness of saying "Yes man, I want porn"

Just wait until they allow you to do selective activation.

"Yes man I would like group sex, barely legal, butt stuff, oh and that mexican donkey rape fantasy stuff looks interesting, I'll get that too."

My wife has worked doing support for this kind of stuff for many years now, and you would be amazed how often people call in and try and cancel porn pay-per-view movies after 5 minutes.

I doubt anyone who wants this stuff would have an issue calling in and getting it turned on.

Ok, that's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. Are they cancelling because the errr content isn't doing it for them, or because they're done?

Is there a form that they have to fill out because . . . .ewww

It's usually the "Oh I accidentally clicked on it but didn't mean to order it line," and then you look at their account history and realize that they seem to have frequent mishaps with their remote.

Their order porn button is probably sticky

Who decides what is porn? Is it just video or pictures too? How about stories? And how will they filter it - will there be a huge ministry doing nothing beyond checking out sites to see if they are porn? What if a non-porn forum has a user that posts something deemed pornographic - does the whole site get blocked? Can the ruling be challenged?

This is set to be a massive boondoggle. It may sound good but the practical application will be problematic at best.

What about sites like Reddit and Imgur that have tons of great content but certainly also have pornography?

I agree, this will be a total mess.

Edit: Not to mention almost any image sharing site, many art websites, Netflix, YouTube (YouTube has age-restricted videos containing nudity), and Vimeo.

I really want the Canadian Conservatives to lose power before they start getting any bright ideas from this

I bet the publishers of adult magazines are thrilled. I expect they will see improved sales once this comes into effect.
