Icon48 NHL planning 2 outdoor games at Lake Tahoe in February

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...e-2021-season/

per Friedman the games would be Col-Vgk and Phi-Bos

Quote:
According to multiple sources, the NHL is beginning its Mystery, Alaska experiment, with four teams as part of a unique two-game, two-day “Outdoor Weekend” showcase at Lake Tahoe. Edgewood Tahoe Resort, home of the popular celebrity golf tournament, is hosting these games, which will be played around the 16th, 17th and 18th holes.

It sounds dynamite, and I’m curious to see it. (Although, it feels wrong that Joe Pavelski will not be playing. He finished third at the 2018 golf event.)

The NHL, searching for something different in a season where fan involvement will be extremely limited, scouted several locations for a scenic event. Right after the Edmonton bubble, there was a trip to Lake Louise, AB — but signage limits on government property nixed that. Another option was Park City, Utah.

That would be really neat. I know it's a novelty, but it would be nice to have a weeks worth of games for multiple teams in such a place.

It’s very pretty there. But to actually play on a lake in the Canadian Rockies would have been incredible.

Agreed on the optics of playing in the rockies, but there is zero chance it would be played on the lake itself.

People have been playing hockey on lakes for a long time.

Lake Tahoe does not really freeze over, so this would be at some constructed outdoor arena?

This would be the Knights' first outdoor game, leaving just five teams which have never played outdoors:

Arizona
Tampa Bay
Florida
Carolina
Columbus

The league has complete rinks at its disposal. Everything from the boards and glass to the ice plant. I believe its 3 of them they have access to at any time.

Same ones you see in the middle of football stadiums and baseball parks.

Same thing you would have seen in Louise had they gone there.

The technology on this stuff is amazing apparently.....just from hearing about it from a guy who knows.

Nothing would've beat Louise. Too bad their signage needs trump the prospect of one of the coolest events ever put to ice.

Yeah I guess it’s on the golf course property for the Edgewood Tahoe resort, not far from Heavenly.

As you say that lake doesn’t freeze over.

No fans so they have a lot smaller footprint required.

Lake Tahoe is 1,000 ft higher altitude than Denver.

not that Lake Louise really needs the help per say, but I've already looked up this Edgewood Tahoe resort and I wouldn't be shocked to find out a bunch of other hockey fans have as well.

A real missed opportunity for Alberta's Tourism sector in my honest opinion.

^ I believe that almost everything in lake Louise is controlled by the carpetbaggers in Ottawa

I wonder if they considered the Kananaskis Lakes or Village area, since it would've been Alberta government territory, rather than federal land.

Agreed. We go to Tahoe very frequently in winter and summer. It’s pretty and is a ton of fun with kids (I’m up here right now). An outdoor game here will be cool. But it is NOTHING compared to what could have been in Lake Louise.

You guys who think they would have played directly on the frozen lake have seen the pressure cracks on lakes right? No team is letting $80 million worth of breakable assets fly around on ice with cracks in it. Cool in a painting, dream, or movie. But not happening.

This is funny:

Here’s @andreburakovsky crushing Pierre-Edouard Bellemare’s dreams and telling him that February’s Lake Tahoe game will not be played on the lake.
