What a horrific event. Hoping for the people in Beirut to be able to come together and save as many victims as possible.

The videos are absolutely insane. Just what this f'ing word needs right now

Wow, that explosion was incredible. Hopefully not too many people were killed or hurt, but the aftermath photos don't look promising.

They'll be adding up the casualties for a while. Really tragic.

Sorry I wasn't criticizing you for posting it. I don't want you to take it that way at all.

Lots of families in mourning tonight or worse yet still not knowing.

No doubt. As others have mentioned Lebanon is in crisis and this is the last thing they need.

Beyond the destruction to the city, that port is hugely important, and its probably out of service for a while.

Where do you see 7 kt? That puts it in the tac nuke ball park.

Lebanese authorities state 2750 tons of ammonia nitrate. Let's assume that's true and let's assume this photo is legit:

It seems legit compared to the warehouse pic here:

The ammonia nitrate manufacturer is NITROPRILL HD, which is very likely a knock-off of Nitropril made by Orica.

Orica sets the TNT equivalence for fire at 20 percent.
0.20 x 2750 = 550 tons

20 percent is conservative for safety purposes so 550 tons is an upper limit not a guess.

Sure, I did some quick research a blast wave travels at 2000 KM's per hour approximately of course it slows as a blast waive is not aerodynamically sound.

There are 3600 seconds in an hour. Therefore 2000 km/hour blast front speed/3600 secs = .55 Km traveled per second. The explosion happened shortly before 5 seconds in the video and looks like it hit him at 8. Therefore .55 x 3 seconds = 1.66 km.

If you geolocate the road he is driving on with google earth, I believe he is on the road ‘Charles Helou’ which is about 500-600 meters from the site of the explosion. Not saying your wrong, just looking at it in a different way.

Those videos are shocking. Certainly many, many dead. Teuly tragic. One solace based on the power of the blast in the video may at least be that many of those who died did not suffer.
